Sports Marketing: Chelsea FC and Sauber. The Soccer Ball has landed in Formula1

Football and Formula 1. Traditionally, these two disciplines are at the heart of the Old sporting continent, whose tens of millions viewers are connected to every appointment. In Italy, Spain, Germany, England, Holland(and others) people live with football and motorsports, that’s the way it is.  In this week for the first time, there is a bridge between one of the most famous football clubs across Europe, Chelsea FC, and a F1 team with one of the longest tradition ever,  Sauber (the fourth oldest  team in the history of the four wheels competition).
From the Grand Prix of Catalunya on 13th May, in fact, the logo of the London club will appear on the livery of the car powered by Ferrari, while Sauber’s logo will be visible on the led on the sideline of  Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s stadium.

To this day it has not been clarified yet whether this operation involves a fee or not  (and if so to whom). What is certain is that the directors of Chelsea and Sauber have been thinking about this partnership for ages, as evidenced by the “clues” appeared on the Swiss cars during the early stages of the Formula 1 championship.

At the  Chinese Grand Prix , there was a sticker on the fairing that read, “Out of the blue” (which is obviously referred to the colour of Chelsea, whose players are precisely  ”blues”, Ed) while at the Bahrain Grand Prix the same sticker reported the sentence “true Blue”.

On Monday, before the Mugello test, we saw on-line the image of  Sauber’s engine cover on which the slogan “Welcome Chelsea FC”. With good timing (and also with a little ‘luck), the agreement will officially start before the final of the Champions League.

“It is a partnership between elite sports –  you can read on the Chelsea official press release- that bonds  the Premier League to the F1 world championship, the two most  followed seasons in Europe.”
