MotoGP: Dovizioso, When Vengeance Is A Dish Best Served Slow

Old saying goes that revenge is a dish best served cold. However, no mention has ever been made about how fast this dish should be delivered to the unwelcome diners. Andrea Dovizioso, born in 1986, has a plan that might work: he will get his revenge calmly.

After conquering the third step of the podium in Barcelona for the Catalunya Grand Prix, Dovizioso was the only one to ride under one minute and forty-two seconds at the Montmelo test. This kind of explains enough the unbelievable moment Dovi is going through.

There is no doubt his steed, the Yamaha Tech 3, with a transalpine name but a Japanese character, got born well. The M1 has a good engine and an excellent chassis: it does not suffer from chattering, supports round and sleek trajectories and has more than decent speed. And it is equally true that Andrea is patiently cuddling its development, without substantial changes, with no bumps and no rollovers. He is aware that every bike, as any horse, has its own tempr which is difficult to dominate. If there is something left to fix – take for example the acceleration out of the corner, whose reference is the Jorge Lorenzo’s M1 – Andrea is in no hurry, as always.

As for what has happened at HRC, also this year Dovi is methodically building its season, aware that this is a sport where is more important to never make a mistake than winning a race and not getting to the finish line in the other five.

Lots of people had their doubts at the beginning of his Tech3 adventure, in predictions where Andrea was outclassed by his “messy” team mateCal Crutchlow, whose ride fascinates and frightens the public, professionals and other drivers. The Briton rides furiously while Andrea dispenses gas, brakes and tires, riding with elegance, drawing curves and trajectories that look like a big round ‘O’.

Casey Stoner, the World Champion, realized it all when in Catalunya he could not succeed in his feat – to get behind the Romagnolo, in the run up to the podium. Also Pedrosa and Lorenzo became aware of this – the two Spaniards first and second place, who for lots of laps have had to fight with the black Yamaha of Dovizioso in third place. A motorbike of a satellite team, a nag in the midst of so many horses.

When this season ends, and Stoner leaves the game to finally engage in fishing, wife, daughter, porch and Australian beaches, Andrea will try to get back on a Official horse. With no doubt, Dovizioso is going to be an important player in a market that is very animated, and that will certainly be dominated by another Yamaha man: Jorge Lorenzo.

At the moment Dovizioso is the fourth in the standings, behind the Majorcan, the soon-to-be retired Casey and the equerry Pedrosa. Anyway, all the clues foreshadow that Andrew will grow race by race ‘till the Grand Finale, where finally the main course will be on the table. Served cold, very cold. But it will be tasty.
