Andre Lotterer, three time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours with Audi, will make an unexpected Formula One debut in this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix for Caterham. The German driver will replace Kamui Kobayashi for this round only, with the popular Japanese driver scheduled to return to the cockpit for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.<\/p>\n
“[I’m] ready for this challenge and I cannot wait to jump in the car and make the most out of the weekend ahead\u201d, said Lotterer,<\/p>\n
\u201cI will need to get settled and used to the car quickly, as the team has worked on a number of updates and we will need to have as much time as possible out on track to optimise the car\u2019s performance,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really enjoy racing at the legendary circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, it\u2019s one of my favourite tracks and it\u2019s very close to where I grew up, so this makes the weekend even more special and one to remember.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lotterer has raced at Spa twice already this year driving for Audi in the WEC 6 hour event and the 24 hour event last month.\u00a0Caterham have said that they “will benefit from having another experienced driver at the wheel of the car throughout the weekend and the German\u2019s feedback will contribute to improve the performance of the car\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe weather also plays a big role at Spa-Francorchamps and Lotterer is one of the most experienced drivers racing under mixed conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lotterer previously served as the Jaguar F1 team’s test driver in 2002 and narrowly missed out on a race seat after the team chose to sign Antonio Pizzonia and Mark Webber instead. The last time he drove a Formula One car was in 2008 when he tested for Toyota.<\/p>\n
