Lotus chairman Gerard Lopez described Palmer as \u201ca fantastic talent and a very credible driver to fulfil the role of third driver at Lotus F1 Team.\u00a0Romain [Grosjean] and Pastor [Maldonado] are both GP2 series champions, so we know what a fantastic proving ground GP2 provides.\u201d<\/p>\n
Palmer\u00a0has driven Formula One machinery before, most recently for Force India at the end of year test in Abu Dhabi last year. He had been hoping to be signed by Force India as a third driver before his offer from Lotus materialised.<\/p>\n
“My main aim is to race in Formula 1 so I\u2019ll be working as hard as I can on every aspect of my new job,” Palmer said, “Working as a third driver is the next best thing to being a race driver. I\u2019ll be working with the engineers throughout the season whether I\u2019m in the car or not.<\/p>\n
“There is a lot to learn and I\u2019ll be working to make a valuable contribution to the E23\u2019s development. Every time I\u2019m in the car, I\u2019ll try to give my very best. It\u2019s not just being quick, but also working with the engineers and the team as well. It\u2019s certainly a change and something different. Understandably, I\u2019m a bit sad that I won\u2019t be competing as racing is my favourite part of being a driver, obviously, but I have to look at the bigger picture.”<\/p>\n
The team also confirmed that Palmer would be taking part in a number of practice sessions during this season.<\/p>\n
“With no race seats available this year, I will still be driving a Formula 1 car, ” Palmer continued, “I\u2019ll be part of a prestigious team, one that will move forward, and my goal is to have a year out of racing now, working to be back racing in Formula 1 in 2016.”<\/p>\n
2015 car launches begin tomorrow with Force India revealing their challenger in Mexico. McLaren-Honda will unveil their highly anticipated MP4-30 on the 29th of January, with Ferrari revealing their first car for Sebastian Vettel a day after. Toro Rosso will introduce their 10th car to the world in the 31st, with the reigning champions Mercedes unveiling the car they hope to retain the title with on the morning of the first pre-season test in Jerez. The rest of the teams, Red Bull, Williams, Lotus and Sauber, have yet to announce when their cars will be launched.<\/p>\n
