{"id":237945,"date":"2018-11-20T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rtrsports.com\/motogp-2018-6-highlights\/"},"modified":"2024-08-09T03:21:12","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T01:21:12","slug":"motogp-2018-6-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rtrsports.com\/en\/blog\/motogp-2018-6-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"MotoGP 2018: 6 highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a season of contrast for <strong>MotoGP<\/strong>, with triumphant highs as well as many lows \u2013 think falls and crashes from Catalunya to Argentina to Valencia, as well as moments of victory for riders on tracks they\u2019d never conquered before, and even a disappointing <strong>cancellation at Silverstone<\/strong> after the rain stopped play in August.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in Qatar in March and concluding in Valencia on 18<sup>th<\/sup> November, the 2018 season saw fights, feuds, and the retirement of some MotoGP icons.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few of the talking points of what has truly been a nail-biting <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> season\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><strong> The Rossi vs. Marquez feud <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>CNN called their feud \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/04\/09\/motorsport\/valentino-rossi-marc-marquez-argentina-motogp-spt\/index.html\">largely dormant<\/a>\u201d, but tensions between two <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> legends \u2013 Valentino Rossi and eventual 2018 winner Marc Marquez \u2013 erupted spectacularly after the Argentine <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> in April. Anger was flared after a meeting of bikes saw Rossi pushed off the track, and he later called his rival \u201cdangerous\u201d. Rossi finished 19<sup>th<\/sup> and Marquez 5<sup>th<\/sup> in the race, with the latter being disciplined for \u201cirresponsible riding\u201d afterwards.<\/p>\n<h2><strong> Assen: the best race of all time? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An exaggeration? Maybe, but it hasn\u2019t stopped the cries that this year\u2019s Dutch <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> was the best of all time coming from all quarters. Why was it so iconic? Something to do with the almost constant overtaking \u2013 more than 100 overtakes in all, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motogp.com\">motogp<\/a>.com \u2013 and there being six different leaders at different times, perhaps? Thrilling, astonishing \u2013 call it what you like; this was <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> at its best.<\/p>\n<h2><strong> A new track for Asia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Thailand took its place as a <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> host country in October, with the opening of the country\u2019s <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> track at the Buriram International Circuit. The new track offers straight runs and fewer turns that we are used to, meaning thrilling speeds can be reached \u2013 and records, without a doubt, will be broken. The Spanish 25-year-old, Marc Marquez, was the first rider to claim victory at Buriram \u2013 one of nine races he won this <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> season.<\/p>\n<h2><strong> The retirement of Dani Pedrosa<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Valencia was the last <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> race for one of the sports modern greats, Spanish rider and 54-time winner Dani Pedrosa. The diminutive Spaniard has defied expectation since his <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> debut in 2006, where he finished a respectable second. The 33-year-old finished his final MotoGP season in 11<sup>th<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n<h2><strong> The final win <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the end, the final <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> race of the season was taken by the Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso. The Italian saw success in a rainy Valencia on Sunday, after previous wins this season in San Marino, Qatar and the Czech Republic. It was Dovizioso\u2019s first win at Valencia, and he called it a \u201ctruly spectacular victory\u201d. With the conditions raining down on the riders in the Spanish city on race weekend, we have to agree.<\/p>\n<h2><strong> Marquez reigns supreme <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Marc Marquez finished in first place at <strong>MotoGP<\/strong> 2018, something that was a surprise to no one. With nine wins out of 19 races, Marquez was busy securing his victory by the beginning of the summer. Despite claims of dangerous driving (from Valentino Rossi, amongst others), there\u2019s no doubt that the young Spanish driver is cleaning up at the moment. Will this continue in 2019? We\u2019ll have to wait and see.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What will the 2019 season have in store for MotoGP\u2019s teams, riders and sponsors?
