One has raced since 1950 on the world’s most famous circuits, with hybrid engines and an audience of more than 800 million fans; the other, born in 2014, races mainly in cities with fully electric cars. In 2026 the gap has narrowed on some fronts, with Formula 1 switching to a power unit that is half electric, and widened on others. Here are all the differences between Formula E and Formula 1, from technology to audience, and what they mean for a brand.

Updated September 2026.

In short: Formula 1 is faster, more watched and more expensive. A 2026 car has about 400 kW of combustion power and 350 kW of electric power, weighs 768 kilograms and races Grands Prix of about 305 kilometres. Formula E races electric cars that in the 2025-26 season had 300 kW in race mode and 350 kW in Attack Mode, on street circuits and in races of about 45 minutes, and from the 2026-27 season it switches to the 600 kW GEN4. The audience is 1.83 billion cumulative viewers for Formula 1 in 2025, against 561 million for Formula E in the 2024-25 season, according to the two championships’ own figures.

Two championships, two philosophies

Formula 1 has been the pinnacle of motor racing since 1950: a constructors’ championship in which every team designs its own car, with a calendar of historic circuits and new city stages, from Las Vegas to Madrid. Formula E was born in the 2014-15 season with a clear idea: to bring electric racing into city centres and use competition to accelerate the development of electric mobility. It has been an FIA world championship since the 2020-21 season.

Ownership is different too. Formula 1 belongs to Liberty Media, which since 2025 has also controlled MotoGP. Formula E is controlled by Liberty Global, which holds 65%: despite the name, it is a different company from Liberty Media, created in 2005 through a spin-off from the group.

The cars compared

Feature

Formula 1 2026

Formula E GEN3 Evo (2025-26)

Formula E GEN4 (from 2026-27)

Engine

V6 turbo hybrid: about 400 kW combustion plus 350 kW electric

Electric: 300 kW in race mode, 350 kW in Attack Mode and qualifying

Electric: 450 kW in race mode, 600 kW in Attack Mode and qualifying

Drive

Rear-wheel

All-wheel only at the start, in qualifying and in Attack Mode

Permanent all-wheel

0-100 km/h acceleration

Not officially disclosed

1.86 seconds

About 1.8 seconds

Top speed

Not officially disclosed, depends on the track

About 320 km/h

Over 335 km/h

Energy

100% sustainable fuel and battery

Battery; about half of race energy comes from regeneration

55 kWh battery, regeneration up to 700 kW

According to Formula E, the GEN3 Evo is the fastest-accelerating FIA single-seater ever, quicker than a Formula 1 car from 0 to 100 km/h. Over a lap, however, Formula 1 remains clearly superior, thanks to downforce and cornering speeds that no electric car can yet match. With the GEN4, unveiled in November 2025, Formula E almost doubles its power, switches to permanent all-wheel drive and uses fully recyclable or reusable materials.

The 2026 Formula 1 car has moved closer to the electric world: the electric component of the power unit has gone from 120 to 350 kW, almost half of total power, and the fuel is fully sustainable. We cover this in our Formula 1 glossary.

The race format

A Formula 1 weekend lasts three days, with practice, qualifying and a Grand Prix of about 305 kilometres, plus a Sprint at six weekends in 2026. A Formula E E-Prix usually takes place on a single day: practice, group qualifying followed by head-to-head knockout duels among the fastest, and a race of about 45 minutes. In the race drivers must activate Attack Mode, which gives more power for a few minutes, and in the 2025-26 season some races also featured Pit Boost, a mandatory 30-second stop for a 600 kW fast charge. Energy management is often as decisive as outright speed.

Calendar and circuits

The 2026 Formula 1 season was planned with 24 Grands Prix, reduced to 22 after the cancellation of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia because of the situation in the Middle East, with Madrid as a new venue. In the 2025-26 season Formula E ran 17 races in 11 cities, from São Paulo to Mexico City, from Miami to Jeddah, from Berlin and Monaco to Tokyo, Shanghai and London, where the season ended in August 2026. The 2026-27 season, the first of the GEN4, will have 21 races in 13 cities, with debuts for Austin, Zandvoort and Brands Hatch.

Who wins

In Formula 1 the reigning world champion is Lando Norris with McLaren, and in 2026 Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes leads the championship. In Formula E the 2024-25 season was won by Oliver Rowland with Nissan, and the 2025-26 season by Pascal Wehrlein with Porsche, his second title; Jaguar won the teams’ title and Porsche the manufacturers’ title. A variety of winners is a historic trait of Formula E: in the early seasons there was a different champion almost every year.

The audience

The biggest difference is in the audience. According to Formula 1, in 2025 the championship reached 1.83 billion cumulative television viewers, with an average of 76.1 million per Grand Prix; according to Nielsen’s latest estimate, from 2026, it has about 831 million fans worldwide. According to Formula E, the 2024-25 season had 561 million cumulative viewers, up 14%, with an average of 33 million per race and 422 million fans. The two series do not always calculate audience figures in the same way, but the order of magnitude is clear: Formula 1 has an audience about three times larger, while Formula E is growing and has a more urban, sustainability-minded profile.

Sustainability

Formula E was built on sustainability: it has been certified net zero carbon since its first season, a result achieved partly through carbon offsetting, has held ISO 20121 certification for sustainable event management since 2016 and in 2025 became the first sport certified on the BSI Net Zero Pathway, with the goal of reaching net zero by 2040 and no later than 2050. Formula 1 aims for net zero by 2030: in June 2026 it reported a 35% reduction in its carbon footprint compared with 2018, and since 2026 it has used 100% sustainable fuels.

The manufacturers

In Formula 1 in 2026 the engine manufacturers are Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Audi and Red Bull with Ford, and General Motors will arrive with Cadillac from 2029. In Formula E, with the arrival of the GEN4, the manufacturers are Jaguar, Nissan, Citroën, Opel, making its debut, Lola, Mahindra and Porsche. McLaren left Formula E at the end of the 2024-25 season, while some brands present in recent years, such as Maserati, are no longer on the grid as manufacturers.

Formula E or Formula 1: which to sponsor

The choice depends on your objectives. Formula 1 offers maximum global visibility and an association with performance and prestige, at higher costs. Formula E offers a young, urban audience, a credible platform for electric mobility, technology and energy brands, and much lower entry costs: in 2023-24 the entire championship had revenue of 189.6 million euros, and title sponsor ABB is worth about 25 million dollars a year according to SportsPro.
