It is almost never a personal choice, but a precise commercial obligation towards the team and its partners.

Updated September 2026.

In the top motorsport series, the way a driver presents themselves in front of a camera is codified down to the smallest detail. The cap, the watch, the water bottle, the team shirt: every object is there for a reason, and almost always that reason has to do with a contract. On stages with a global audience, the driver is the point where the attention of media and fans converges, and every appearance is designed to deliver as much as possible for the team, its sponsors and the rights holders.

Why Do F1 Drivers Always Wear Caps?

The answer lies in the camera shots. For years it was thought that the key to visibility was surface area: the bigger the logo, the more effective the sponsorship. Modern exposure measurement has shown that position and legibility matter more. In interviews, press conferences and photo shoots, cameras zoom in on the face and upper torso and leave everything else out of frame. A huge logo where the lens does not reach is useless.

The cap, on the other hand, sits exactly where attention is focused: on the driver’s head, a few centimetres from the face. That makes it one of the most valuable assets in a team’s entire commercial inventory, and it is also why drivers wear it even indoors, in press rooms where there is no sun at all. It is the same principle that drives the value of logos on the cars themselves, as we explain in our guide to F1 sponsorship costs: you buy screen time, not square centimetres.

Not a Choice but a Contractual Obligation

In most cases the cap is not voluntary. Teams ask their drivers to put it on as soon as they step out of the car, when they walk into a press conference or when they leave the motorhome, and it is common to see communications staff hand the driver a cap, a bottle and a watch a moment before the camera starts rolling.

The exceptions make the news precisely because they are rare. In 2013, his first year at Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton told the German press that he did not wear the team’s official cap because he did not like it, and offered to help design the team’s clothing. A few years later Mercedes would build entire cap collections around him, sold to fans all over the world.

The Podium Cap: Pirelli in F1, Michelin in MotoGP

Attentive viewers notice that the cap is not always the same. On the Formula 1 podium, the top three wear the cap of Pirelli, the sole tyre supplier, with a different design for each Grand Prix. In MotoGP the same happens with Michelin: the blue podium cap has become a symbol of victory. In both cases the tyre supplier secures its presence in the most filmed and most shared image of the race, the podium ceremony.

Then there is a second step, less visible but just as important: those caps are produced in limited runs and sold to fans. The communication medium thus becomes a product, and the sponsorship generates revenue as well as visibility.

Team Cap or Personal Cap

Away from the podium, for interviews and fan meetings, the general rule is the team cap, with the logo of the team, the title sponsor and often the driver’s number. Drivers with personal deals can replace it, provided the activation is agreed with the team and does not clash with other sponsors. The best-known example is Fernando Alonso, who founded the clothing brand Kimoa: Kimoa caps bearing the Spanish driver’s name are now also sold in Aston Martin’s official shop, a sign that the driver’s personal interest and the team’s can coincide.

From Niki Lauda to Merchandising: the Cap as a Cult Object

The most famous cap in Formula 1 history is still Niki Lauda’s red one, which the Austrian champion began wearing after his crash at the Nürburgring in 1976. That cap became such a valuable advertising space that it changed hands several times: Parmalat appeared on it for more than twenty years, before Viessmann took over in 2002.

The phenomenon, after all, was not born in motorsport. It was baseball that made the peaked cap popular, where it is part of the uniform and always carries the team’s logo: from the New York Yankees to the Los Angeles Dodgers, it became a fashion accessory and a badge of belonging, one of the most successful products of global sports marketing. It is no surprise that Formula 1 and MotoGP teams have also put their drivers’ caps at the centre of their merchandising, often with the support of a sports brand licensing agency.

What the Cap Teaches Sponsors

The lesson for a brand is simple: the value of a sponsorship is not measured in surface area, but in real exposure. A logo on a driver’s cap appears in almost every interview, every press conference and every paddock photograph, and it keeps working even when the car is standing still. That is why “small” assets such as caps, race suits and helmets carry real weight in negotiations, and should be negotiated together with the sponsorship activation rights.

Want to bring your brand to Formula 1?
RTR Sports Marketing has been advising brands on motorsport sponsorship since 1995.

Formula 1 Sponsorship

Sources: Pirelli, the 2026 podium caps; F1-Fansite, Hamilton and the Mercedes cap in 2013; Grandprix.com, Lauda and Parmalat; Aston Martin F1, Alonso’s Kimoa cap.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Formula 1 drivers always wear caps?

Because the head is the most filmed part of the body in interviews, press conferences and photographs.
