It is not about looks: without that neck, a driver loses control of the head, and with it clear vision and quick reflexes.

Updated September 2026.

It is one of the most common fan curiosities, and search data confirms it: Charles Leclerc’s neck, for example, is among the most searched queries on this topic. Behind a question that seems funny sits real physics, real training and a part of motorsport that matters a lot to brands too.

Why do F1 drivers have such thick necks: the short answer

Because the neck is the only thing that holds the head still while the car brakes, corners and accelerates. On a single-seater the head has no side support: it is held up by the neck muscles, and every time the g-force rises, those muscles have to fight a weight that grows with it. With specific training, repeated for years, the muscle bands become bigger and more prominent. The result is the “bull neck” you see in interviews.

What g-force is and how much a driver feels

G-force (g) measures how many times body weight is multiplied by an acceleration or a deceleration. It is the roller-coaster feeling, but without a pause: a Formula 1 driver feels it under braking, in corners and on corner exit throughout the race. According to Formula 1, braking reaches up to 6 g, while sustained cornering forces are 4-5 g, with peaks close to 6 g at some circuits. You can read more in our article on g-force in F1.

The point is what it means for the neck. Head and helmet together weigh about 7 kg: at 5 g, the load the neck has to hold is multiplied by five and, depending on the corner, reaches between 25 and 35 kg. Not for a moment, but through long, repeated corners over a race that can last up to two hours, the maximum set by the regulations.

For perspective, fighter pilots also endure up to 9 g. But unlike F1 drivers, they wear anti-g suits, which add about 1.5-2 g of tolerance, and use a breathing and muscle-tensing technique to avoid losing consciousness.

How the neck is trained: bands, weighted helmets and machines

The neck is trained almost all year round and, according to Formula 1, at least five times a week. The tools are few but specific: elastic bands around the head, weighted helmets to simulate cornering loads, pulley systems with cables and weights that apply resistance from several directions, flexion, extension and side movements. Mercedes describes the hardest exercise: a 30 kg weight tied to the head, with the driver holding it while lying over the edge of a table. In the gym a driver can lift up to 40 kg using only neck muscles.

These are the videos you often see on social media: the trainer pulls the bands one way and the driver resists. It is isometric work, similar to what the head has to do in the car, and it is not only about the neck: core exercises that mimic the driving position also help support the torso in the seat.

Heat, sweat and weight: how much drivers lose in a race

On top of the muscular work comes environmental stress. At the hottest, most humid Grands Prix, such as Singapore, the cockpit becomes a sauna and drivers can lose about 3 kg in sweat during the race, with estimates reaching up to 4 kg. That is why they also train in saunas or ride bikes in the hottest hours, and use cooling vests and collars before sessions.

Weight matters enormously: Nico Rosberg knows it well. In 2016, the year of his world title, he removed the paint from his helmet (80 grams) and stopped cycling in the summer to lose 1 kg of leg muscle. Every gram counts in a category where the car has a minimum weight and the gap between two drivers is measured in thousandths of a second. Our in-depth piece on why F1 drivers get weighed after the race explains the rules in force.

What changes with the 2026 cars

The 2026 technical regulations cut car downforce by about 30% and drag by about 55%, with narrower tyres. Corners become slower and, in theory, forces on the neck should fall compared with previous cars. For now there are no comparable public measurements between the two generations, so the neck stays at the heart of preparation: braking is still violent, races are still long, and a stable head is still the condition for driving at the limit.

Why this matters to brands

Formula 1 drivers, like those in MotoGP, are complete athletes: strong, resilient, light and able to concentrate under stress. For fitness, nutrition, hydration, health and wearable-tech brands, they are natural ambassadors. The most recent case is Whoop, which from 2026 is Ferrari’s official health and fitness partner: the wristband tracks drivers’ sleep, stress and recovery, and the logo appears on the car and on team apparel.

The lesson for a company is the same as in every good deal: sponsorship works when the product has a concrete reason to be on track. If you want to understand what it costs to enter this world, you will find the numbers in our guide to the cost of Formula 1 sponsorship.

Want to bring your brand to Formula 1?
RTR Sports Marketing has been building motorsport sponsorships since 1995.

Formula 1 sponsorship

Sources: Formula 1, neck training and g-forces; Mercedes-AMG F1, g-force explained; Yahoo, why F1 drivers have thick necks; Formula 1, the Singapore Grand Prix; PlanetF1, Rosberg and the marginal gains of 2016; Air & Space Forces Magazine; BlackBook Motorsport, Ferrari and Whoop.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Formula 1 drivers have such thick necks?

Because the neck is the only thing that holds the head still while the car brakes and corners with forces of up to 5-6 g.
