In seven seasons in the premier class he won 38 races, took 39 pole positions and stood on the podium 69 times in 115 grands prix. He announced his retirement in 2012, at 26, and stopped at the end of the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Updated October 2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Stoner is almost always remembered for his speed. The numbers say something more precise: he won one grand prix for every three starts, and he left when he could still win. Here is his story, from the dirt tracks of Queensland to his last year with Honda, and up to today.<\/p>\n<h2>Casey Stoner at a glance<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Born in Southport, Queensland (Australia), on 16 October 1985.<\/li>\n<li>MotoGP world champion in 2007 (Ducati) and 2011 (Honda).<\/li>\n<li>In MotoGP: 115 grands prix, 38 wins, 69 podiums, 39 pole positions.<\/li>\n<li>In the World Championship: 250cc (2002 and 2005), 125cc (2003 and 2004), MotoGP (2006-2012).<\/li>\n<li>Retirement announced on 17 May 2012 at Le Mans, in a press conference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/rtrsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/stoner_2.jpeg\" alt=\"Casey Stoner, portrait from 2013\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The early years: from dirt tracks to England<\/h2>\n<p>Stoner raced for the first time at the age of four, in the under-9 class on a dirt track on the Gold Coast. Between the ages of 6 and 14 he travelled around Australia with his family and won 41 Australian dirt and long track titles and more than 70 state titles.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after his fourteenth birthday his parents decided to move to England, because in Australia he could not have raced on tarmac before the age of 16. In 2000, in his first year of road racing, he won the English 125cc championship on an Aprilia. Until 2002 he competed in the British and Spanish national 125cc championships, then reached the World Championship with the team of <strong>Lucio Cecchinello<\/strong>, the owner of the LCR squad.<\/p>\n<h2>The smaller classes: 125 and 250 (2002-2005)<\/h2>\n<p>His debut in 2002, at sixteen, came in the 250cc class on Cecchinello&#8217;s Aprilia: no podiums in 15 races, a best result of fifth at Brno in the Czech Republic, and twelfth in the standings with 68 points.<\/p>\n<p>In 2003 he went back to the 125cc class with the same team. He finished with four podiums, including his first win, at Valencia in the last race, and eighth in the standings with 125 points. In 2004 he moved to KTM and won at Sepang, in Malaysia, the Austrian manufacturer&#8217;s first road racing grand prix win: he finished fifth with 145 points.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005 he returned to the 250cc class on Cecchinello&#8217;s factory Aprilia. With five wins, ten podiums and 254 points he finished second in the championship, behind Dani Pedrosa.<\/p>\n<h2>MotoGP debut with Honda LCR (2006)<\/h2>\n<p>In 2006 Stoner moved up to MotoGP on the LCR team&#8217;s Honda. In the second race, in Qatar, he took pole position; in the next one, in Turkey, he finished second. He ended the year eighth with 119 points. He crashed often, and in the paddock they gave him the nickname &#8220;Rolling Stoner&#8221;. Livio Suppo, then Ducati team manager, signed him for 2007.<\/p>\n<h2>The Ducati years: the 2007 title and the rest (2007-2010)<\/h2>\n<p>In 2007 Stoner moved to Ducati, in the Ducati Marlboro Team, with Loris Capirossi as team-mate. He won the opening race in Qatar, his first MotoGP victory, and finished the season with ten wins. The title came at Motegi, in Japan, on 23 September: a sixth place was enough, in a race won by Capirossi himself.<\/p>\n<p>It was Ducati&#8217;s first riders&#8217; title and the first for a non-Japanese manufacturer in the premier class since 1974. Stoner was 21: at the time he was the second-youngest champion in the premier class, after Freddie Spencer in 1983.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/rtrsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/stoner_3.jpeg\" alt=\"Casey Stoner on the Ducati Desmosedici in 2010\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2008 he won six races and finished second in the championship, behind Valentino Rossi. In 2009 he won four times, but missed three grands prix (Brno, Indianapolis and Misano) because of an illness first attributed to anaemia and a stomach inflammation, then to lactose intolerance: he finished fourth. In 2010 he won three races (Arag\u00f3n, Japan and Phillip Island) and was fourth again. In July 2010 his move to Honda for 2011 was announced.<\/p>\n<p>The 2007 title remained Ducati&#8217;s only one in MotoGP for fifteen years: the next one was won by <strong>Francesco Bagnaia<\/strong> in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Honda and the second title (2011-2012)<\/h2>\n<p>In 2011 Stoner moved to the Repsol Honda team, where he was reunited with Livio Suppo, by then team principal. He won ten races and clinched his second world title on 16 October 2011 at Phillip Island, in his home grand prix, on his twenty-sixth birthday. He ended the season with a 90-point lead over the runner-up.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012 he won five races (Jerez, Estoril, Assen, Laguna Seca and Phillip Island) and finished third in the championship. At Phillip Island he took his sixth consecutive home win: from 2007 to 2012 he never let anyone else win that grand prix, four times with Ducati and twice with Honda.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/rtrsports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/stoner_1.jpeg\" alt=\"Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner at Laguna Seca in 2012\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Stoner against Rossi<\/h2>\n<p>The rivalry with Valentino Rossi had three moments. In 2007 Stoner won the opening grand prix in Qatar and, at the end of the season, the title. On 20 July 2008 at Laguna Seca he started from pole position and set the lap record: on lap 23 Rossi passed him at the Corkscrew with a move that sparked debate, and won the race. Stoner ended up in the gravel at the last corner, rejoined and finished second.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, Rossi (in his first season with Ducati) lost the front at the first corner of lap eight and took out Stoner, then the championship leader. Rossi went to the Honda garage to apologise and Stoner told him that his ambition outweighed his talent.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship changed over time. At the 2012 French Grand Prix at Le Mans, Rossi was second, having passed Stoner on the last lap, and Stoner third. He said he had lost his passion for racing and cited constantly changing rules, the criticism and his wish to spend more time with his family: he had become a father only a few months earlier, in February, with his wife Adriana. His last grand prix was in Valencia, in November 2012. He was 27.<\/p>\n<h2>After racing: Honda and Ducati test rider<\/h2>\n<p>In 2013 Stoner raced for a season in the Dunlop V8 Supercar Series with the Triple Eight team and began working as a test rider for Honda, a role he kept in 2014 and 2015. In 2016 he returned to Ducati as a test rider and brand ambassador, and stayed until the end of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2021, at the Algarve Grand Prix in Portim\u00e3o, he came back to the paddock as a Ducati guest and worked alongside Bagnaia and Jack Miller as a coach: it was his first appearance at a grand prix since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Stoner lives with chronic fatigue syndrome, which he has spoken about in public several times.
