The scale is real: 6.7 million spectators at the 2025 F1 Grands Prix, 3.6 million at MotoGP circuits and 118,036 attendees from 94 countries at World Ducati Week 2026, a brand event. The weak point is still measurement, and here is how to approach it.

Updated in October 2026.

The word “experiential” is used for everything, from a gazebo to a prize draw. In motorsport it has a more precise meaning, because the audience is already on site, in large numbers and for several days. This guide narrows the subject to what can be verified: four forms of activation, public data on the motorsport audience and a way of measuring return that does not stop at an impression.

What experiential sports marketing is

It is a strategy in which the brand does not just appear, with a logo on a car or a banner trackside, but gets the audience to do something: try a product, take part in an event, meet a driver, enter a reserved area. The physical and emotional experience counts, not just exposure.

In motorsport the line with traditional sponsorship is thin: sponsorship buys the right to be associated with a championship or a team, activation is what the brand does with that right. A right without activation stays a logo, as the guide to sports sponsorship activation explains.

Where it happens in motorsport: four forms

Four recurring forms, with the public figures that measure their scale:

Brand events. World Ducati Week 2026, at Misano from 3 to 5 July, counted 118,036 attendees from 94 countries, with a motorcycle parade, test rides, meetings with riders and engineers and 275 official clubs; the published data show more than 2 million page views and more than 20 million social impressions (ANSA, Red Live).

Presence at the circuit. The 2025 F1 Grands Prix drew 6.7 million spectators, an all-time record, with 19 of 24 events sold out (Formula1.com); MotoGP drew 3.6 million, with 312,000 people at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans (Motorsport.com). Fan zones and activations have an audience already present here, like the Peroni unit and the Heineken 0.0 gantry in the images.

Hospitality. Welcoming clients and partners in reserved areas over the race weekend is the most business-oriented form; for MotoGP it is described on the page about MotoGP hospitality.

Content and digital. F1’s social followers are 114.5 million, +19% (GrandPrix247); MotoGP counts more than 60 million and its YouTube channel passed one billion minutes watched (Motorsport.com). One example is the F1 Tracks playlist with Tiësto’s live performance at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Why it works with the motorsport audience

The 2025 global survey by Formula 1 and Motorsport Network, based on more than 100,000 responses from highly engaged fans in 186 countries, reports that 86% watch at least 16 races a season, 90% say they are emotionally invested in results, 94% plan to follow F1 in five years and one in three is more likely to buy from partners (Formula1.com). It is the condition brand experience looks for: sustained attention and an emotional bond.

The limit is the sample’s own: these are highly engaged fans who chose to respond. The data describe an attitude, not buying behaviour, and do not say how much a single activation yields.

The challenges

Budget. Activation has its own costs, from builds to staff, logistics and content, and should be planned into the budget from the start.

Measurement. A social impression or a presence is not a return: objectives and indicators set beforehand are needed.

Logistics. The calendar is dense and itinerant, with 24 races in F1 in 2025 (Formula1.com) and 22 Grands Prix in 18 countries in MotoGP (Motorsport.com), each with different rules and spaces.

Context. The experience carries the brand’s name but takes place in an environment the brand does not control: the championship’s results and controversies also fall on whoever activates.

How to measure an activation’s return

The usual indicators are four: engagement (interactions, dwell time, mentions), reach (people exposed, traffic, coverage), conversions (sign-ups, enquiries, purchases) and sales. Which one weighs most depends on the objective set beforehand, and it is the step activations skip most often.

Two examples of what can be declared. World Ducati Week 2026 reports 118,036 attendees, more than 2 million page views and more than 20 million social impressions (ANSA): these are measures of reach, not of economic return. For economic return there is the 2000 edition, told in the World Ducati Week case study: a regional investment of 294.2 million lire generated an economic impact of 13.8 billion lire, a ratio of 1 to 46.9 (RTR Sports Marketing, archive data, Promozione Alberghiera Rimini). It is an impact on a territory, not on a brand.

Best practices

Start from the audience: who is present at that race or event and what they expect to do.

Design an experience only that brand can offer: try, meet, enter an area, take something home.

Choose the right sports property: a championship, team or event in line with the brand’s values and target, not just its visibility.

Set objectives and indicators before signing and collect data, such as sign-ups and contacts, during the activation itself.

Keep sponsorship and activation together: the right of association is worth something only if it is used throughout the season.

Where the audience is going

The motorsport audience is growing and changing: in F1, 42% of fans are women (it was 37% in 2018) and 43% are under 35 (Formula1.com); in MotoGP more than half are under 35 and Sprint races saw a TV audience up 26% (Motorsport.com). For activations this means audiences that are younger and more female than a few years ago: an experience designed only for the long-standing enthusiast risks missing the others.

How to set up an activation in motorsport

You start from objective, audience and budget, then choose the championship. To get oriented there are the page on Formula 1 sponsorship, the one on MotoGP sponsorship, the guide on the cost of a Formula 1 sponsorship and, for the general picture, the article on the benefits of sports sponsorship. Today entry into F1 starts from a minimum level of $2 million a year, two seasons minimum, no single race (RTR Sports Marketing, September 2026 survey).

A logo is seen. An experience is remembered, but only if someone decided beforehand how to measure it.

Want to bring your brand into motorsport?
RTR Sports Marketing has been building motorsport sponsorships since 1995.

Formula 1 sponsorship

Sources: Formula1.com, the 2025 season in numbers; GrandPrix247, the 2025 season review; Formula1.com, Global Fan Survey 2025; Motorsport.com, MotoGP 2025: the records; ANSA, World Ducati Week 2026; Red Live, World Ducati Week 2026; RTR Sports Marketing, September 2026 survey of market thresholds in F1 and RTR archive for the World Ducati Week case (Promozione Alberghiera Rimini).

Frequently asked questions

            What is experiential sports marketing?

It is a strategy in which the brand lets the audience live an experience, at the circuit, at its own event or online, instead of just displaying a logo.
