In 1990 he won the German Formula 3 championship and joined the Mercedes-Benz junior programme, together with that season’s rivals Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger (Wikipedia). The following year, at Spa, came Formula 1.

Jordan and Benetton: the debut and the first two titles (1991-1995)

The debut is the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix with Jordan: Schumacher replaces Bertrand Gachot, who was in prison in England after an argument with a taxi driver, and qualifies seventh, equal to the team’s best grid position of that season. He retires on the first lap with a clutch failure (Wikipedia, Formula1.com). Benetton signs him for the next race: at Monza he finishes fifth, his best result of 1991 (4 points in 6 races).

The first win comes at Spa on 30 August 1992, in a wet race, on the same circuit as his debut (Wikipedia). The following year he wins in Portugal; in 1994 he wins 8 races.

The 1994 title is decided in the last race, in Adelaide, on 13 November: Schumacher arrives with a one-point lead over Damon Hill, runs off the track and rejoins, then when Hill tries to pass the two cars touch: Schumacher retires, Hill stops with damaged suspension and the title goes to the German (Motor Sport Magazine, Wikipedia). In 1995 he wins 9 races out of 17 and takes a second consecutive title (Wikipedia, Formula1.com).

Ferrari: five consecutive titles (1996-2006)

In 1996 he moves to Ferrari, which had not won the drivers’ championship since 1979 with Jody Scheckter: 21 years of waiting (RaceFans). The first seasons are a build-up: three wins and third place in 1996, five wins in 1997 (Formula1.com). In 1997, at Jerez, he hits Jacques Villeneuve in the last race of the championship and the FIA excludes him from that year’s drivers’ standings (Wikipedia, Planet F1). In 1998 he loses the title to Mika Häkkinen in the last race, in Japan; in 1999 he breaks a leg at Silverstone because of a rear brake failure, while Ferrari wins the Constructors’ championship (Wikipedia).

The title arrives in 2000: at Suzuka, on 8 October, after a duel with Häkkinen, Schumacher becomes Ferrari’s first world champion in 21 years (RaceFans). Four more follow. In 2001 he clinches it with four races still to run and at Spa, with his 52nd win, he passes Alain Prost’s record of 51 (Wikipedia). In 2002 he wins 11 races, finishes on the podium in all 17 of the season and takes the fifth title at the French Grand Prix with six races to spare, equalling Juan Manuel Fangio (Formula1.com, Wikipedia). In 2003 comes the sixth, a new record; in 2004 the seventh, with 13 wins in 18 races (Formula1.com).

2005 ends in third place. In 2006 he fights Fernando Alonso for an eighth title and announces his retirement after winning at Monza on 10 September (Autosport). In the last race, in Brazil, he starts tenth, picks up a rear puncture, drops to 19th and climbs back to fourth, while Alonso wins a second consecutive championship (Crash.net, Wikipedia).

The Ferrari balance sheet: 72 of his 91 wins, five consecutive drivers’ titles and six consecutive constructors’ titles, from 1999 to 2004 (Formula1.com, Wikipedia).

The Mercedes comeback (2010-2012)

In 2009 he tries to return at Ferrari in place of the injured Felipe Massa, but withdraws because of the after-effects of a motorcycle accident in February, which had left him with a neck injury (Mail & Guardian). In 2010, aged 41, he returns to Formula 1 with Mercedes (Formula1.com).

The results are far from those at Ferrari: ninth in 2010 with 72 points, eighth in 2011 with 76, thirteenth in 2012 with 49, without a win (Formula One History). The only podium is third place at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 24 June 2012: starting twelfth, he climbs through the field with a late tyre change and stands on the podium at 43 (Autosport).

At Monaco in 2012 he sets the fastest qualifying time, but a five-place penalty for the contact with Bruno Senna in Spain drops him to sixth on the grid and the official pole goes to Mark Webber; he retires on lap 63 with a fuel pressure problem (Autosport). His last race is the Brazilian Grand Prix on 25 November 2012, his 306th: he finishes seventh after a puncture (Wikipedia).

Michael Schumacher’s numbers

At the end of his career the official totals are these (Formula One History, Wikipedia):

World titles: 7 (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004).

Grands Prix: 306 started, 91 won.

Pole positions: 68. Fastest laps: 77. Podiums: 155. Points: 1,566.

With Ferrari: 72 wins and five consecutive drivers’ titles (2000-2004).

Benchmark seasons: in 2002 a podium in all 17 races, in 2004 13 wins in 18 races.

Not every record has stayed his. The 13 wins of 2004 were passed by Max Verstappen, with 15 in 2022 and 19 in 2023 (Formula1.com). On 25 October 2020 at Portimão Lewis Hamilton won his 92nd race, passing Schumacher’s 91 (Motorsport.com), and on 15 November of the same year, in Istanbul, he equalled his seven titles (FIA). No driver has more than seven.

The 2013 skiing accident

On 29 December 2013 Schumacher falls while skiing in Méribel, in the French Alps, and hits his head on a rock despite wearing a helmet. He undergoes emergency surgery and is admitted in a coma in Grenoble (Sports Illustrated). The induced coma lasts about six months, rehabilitation continues in Lausanne and from September 2014 his care continues at his private home (Wikipedia).

Since then Schumacher has not appeared in public (Wikipedia) and his family has chosen the greatest privacy about his condition. Official information is deliberately scarce: only what is confirmed is reported here.

Family and Mick Schumacher

Schumacher married Corinna Betsch in 1995 and they have two children, Gina-Maria and Mick (Wikipedia).

Mick followed his father’s path: he started 43 Grands Prix with Haas in 2021 and 2022, raced in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine in 2024 and 2025 and in 2026 races full time in IndyCar with Rahal Letterman Lanigan, with number 47 (Rahal Letterman Lanigan, IndyCar).

Schumacher’s legacy

The Ferrari case is the clearest example of how far a driver can shift a team’s fortunes: 21 years without a drivers’ title, then five consecutive championships and six consecutive constructors’ titles (RaceFans, Formula1.com). That is why his name returns every time a champion signs for the Scuderia: Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, won his first race in red at Barcelona on 14 June 2026, the 106th of his career (FIA).

Off the track, in 2002 UNESCO named him a Champion for Sport (Crash.net, Wikipedia).

What Schumacher teaches anyone sponsoring in Formula 1

The Ferrari case says one simple thing: the value of a team, and so of whoever sponsors it, depends on how much it wins and who drives it. Today a brand wanting to enter F1 starts from precise thresholds: an entry level of $2 million a year, two seasons minimum, no single race (RTR Sports Marketing, September 2026 survey). To get oriented there are the guide on the cost of a Formula 1 sponsorship, the analysis of how much Formula 1 drivers earn and the page on Formula 1 sponsorship.

Records change hands: Hamilton and Verstappen have already equalled or passed them.
