In 47 Grands Prix he took one win (United States 1971), 13 podiums and 89 points. He died aged 29 in qualifying for the 1973 United States Grand Prix, on the eve of Stewart’s 100th and final race, which Stewart then withdrew from.

Updated October 2026.

F1 history has champions who won and champions who promised. Cevert belongs to a third category: those who were about to become their team’s number one without knowing it. In 1974 he would have been Tyrrell’s lead driver, and we only learned that afterwards. This is the story of how he got there, how it ended, and what it says to anyone in sponsorship about the value of a driver the championship never had the chance to measure.

Who was François Cevert: from motorbikes to Formula 3

François Cevert was born in Paris on 25 February 1944. He started racing on motorbikes, then moved to four wheels after national service: in 1966 he attended the racing school at Le Mans and then Winfield at Magny-Cours, and in 1968 he won the French Formula 3 championship in a Tecno. In 1969 he finished third in Formula 2, and the next step was F1.

At Tyrrell, in Jackie Stewart’s shadow

Cevert drove for Ken Tyrrell from the 1970 Dutch Grand Prix, as Jackie Stewart’s team-mate. His first point came with a sixth place at that year’s Italian Grand Prix. In 1971 he finished the world championship third with 26 points and seven podiums, behind Stewart, who won the title. His relationship with Stewart is one the paddock remembers: the Scot has said he taught Cevert everything he knew about racing, and that he was convinced Cevert would have become world champion.

François Cevert’s Formula 1 numbers

Grands Prix contested: 47;

Wins: 1, in the United States in 1971;

Podiums: 13;

Fastest laps: 2;

Points: 89;

Best championship positions: third in 1971 (26 points) and fourth in 1973 (47 points).

Watkins Glen 1971: the only win

The win came on 3 October 1971 at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, on a circuit just lengthened by about a mile with a new section known as the “Boot”. Cevert started fifth, passed Stewart on lap 14, kept the lead and won ahead of Jo Siffert. Stewart was already world champion: the race was a victory parade, and Cevert took it for himself. It was also the first win by a French driver in F1 since Maurice Trintignant’s in 1958.

Watkins Glen 1973: the Saturday that changed Tyrrell

The 1973 United States Grand Prix was the final race of the season and Stewart’s 100th, and Stewart had secretly decided to retire. In qualifying on Saturday 6 October, Cevert, driving the Tyrrell 006, was chasing pole position. In the fast uphill right-left combination known as “The Esses” the car ran a little too far to the left, hit the kerbs and left the track. Cevert was 29. Stewart drove around the circuit once more to try to understand what had happened, then parked the car: Tyrrell withdrew from the Grand Prix, and the Scot ended his career there. In the standings Cevert was fourth with 47 points. For 1974 he would have been the team’s number one.

Cevert, Elf and what a driver is worth to sponsors

From 1971 Tyrrell raced in French blue and under the name Elf Team Tyrrell, backed by the French oil company Elf. In a team with that brand on the bodywork, having a young French driver with a rising career and an image the public liked was also a question of sponsorship value.

The Cevert case brings into focus a point that matters even more today. A driver’s value to a brand does not coincide with the titles won: it depends on results, on the story he tells, on closeness to the sponsor’s market. Cevert won a single race, but the story of a Frenchman in Elf’s blue team still makes him a recognisable figure. What he would have been worth with a long career is a question that cannot be answered: we say so without inventing figures.

To see how the relationship between team, driver and brand works today, there is the guide to the title sponsor of every team in 2026, and to understand what it costs to enter F1, the overview of the cost of Formula 1 sponsorship. Another talent of the 1970s whose value never got to complete is Jochen Rindt, the posthumous world champion of 1970.

The legacy: safety first

Stewart, who had lost his team-mate and friend, became one of the names most associated with the campaigns for safety in F1. Today cars and circuits are different, and drivers reach the end of their careers: that is why stories like this are read with a different weight.

Cevert did not have the time to show whether the numbers would have proved Stewart right. He had the time to leave the sense that they would.

Want to bring your brand into Formula 1?
RTR Sports Marketing has been building motorsport sponsorship programmes since 1995.

Formula 1 sponsorship

Sources: Wikipedia, François Cevert; F1 Fansite, François Cevert; Goodwood, François Cevert: the F1 champion that never was; Wikipedia, 1971 United States Grand Prix; Wikipedia, 1973 United States Grand Prix; Motor Sport Magazine, archive November 1973; Wikipedia, Tyrrell 003.

Frequently asked questions

            Who was François Cevert?

A French Formula 1 driver (Paris, 1944 – Watkins Glen, 1973), Jackie Stewart’s team-mate at Tyrrell.
