Toto Wolff sells 15% of his stake in Mercedes to George Kurtz, the founder of CrowdStrike and already one of the team’s commercial partners. Wolff owns a third of the team, so the deal covers roughly 5% of the outfit, and he stays on as CEO and team principal. The detail that made the headlines, though, is a different one: according to the specialist press, the transaction values Mercedes at around 6 billion dollars.

Six billion for a company that builds two racing cars a year. When we published the first version of this article, in July 2023, Forbes put the average value of a Formula 1 team at 1.88 billion dollars, 276% more than in 2019. It already looked enormous. Two years later the average has almost doubled.

This piece tries to explain where that figure comes from, what each team is worth today and what it all means for anyone who looks at Formula 1 sponsorship as a marketing investment rather than a weekend passion.

A 3.87 billion dollar championship

The starting point is the championship’s turnover. In 2025 Formula 1 brought in 3.873 billion dollars, 14% more than the previous year, with operating income of 632 million (+28%). Those are the annual results of Liberty Media, which has owned the championship since 2017, published in February 2026 for a 24-race season.

The revenue mix is instructive. 31.3% comes from media rights, 26.7% from the fees that circuits and governments pay to host a race, 21.7% from championship sponsorship and the remaining 20.3% from hospitality, freight and licensing. Out of that pie, 1.4 billion dollars went back to the ten teams as prize money and contractual payments.

This is where the first engine of growth becomes clear: a Formula 1 team does not live only on what it can sell by itself, it also shares in the revenue of a championship growing at double digits. Whoever owns a team also owns a slice of that flow.

What each Formula 1 team is worth

The two most quoted estimates come from Forbes and Sportico, released a few days apart in November 2025. They use different methods and reach different numbers, but they tell the same story.

For Forbes the average team is worth 3.6 billion dollars, 89% more than in 2023. Ferrari leads at 6.5 billion, followed by Mercedes at 6, McLaren at 4.4 and Red Bull Racing at 4.35. Then come Aston Martin (3.2), Williams (2.5), Alpine (2.45), Sauber (2.4), Racing Bulls (2.3) and Haas (1.5). No team, in short, is worth less than one and a half billion.

Sportico is slightly more cautious: an average of 3.42 billion, up 48% in a year and more than double the 1.61 billion of 2023. Here too Ferrari comes first (6.4 billion), ahead of Mercedes (5.88) and McLaren (4.73). According to Sportico, the average value of a Formula 1 team now trails only NFL and NBA franchises, which puts it above MLB.

One figure in the Forbes ranking matters more than all the others. In 2019 a team was worth, on average, 2.3 times its revenue. In 2023 the multiple had risen to 4.9. In 2025 it reached about 8 times the previous year’s revenue. In other words, buyers no longer pay for what a team earns today, but for what they think it will earn tomorrow.

And today’s accounts, seen up close, are less spectacular than the valuations. Again according to Forbes, in 2024 Mercedes had revenue of 799 million with operating income of 202, Ferrari 670 million with 80 in operating income, while Aston Martin, Williams, Alpine and Sauber closed at a loss. Average team revenue in 2024 was around 430 million dollars.

The price of scarcity

Why would anyone pay eight times revenue for a team that may well be losing money? The most honest answer fits in one word: scarcity. There are eleven places on the grid, and adding one takes the consent of Formula 1, the FIA and, in practice, the teams already there.

The Cadillac case proves it better than any analysis. To join as the eleventh team from 2026, General Motors and TWG Global agreed to pay a so-called anti-dilution fee, the compensation owed to the ten existing teams for the share of prize money they lose by splitting the pie eleven ways. The rules in force at the time set it at 200 million dollars; the figure reported by the press for Cadillac is around 450 million. An entry ticket worth more than an entire team a few years ago.

The second pillar is the cost cap. Introduced in 2021 at 145 million dollars and lowered to 135 million from 2023, it did something nobody in Formula 1 had ever managed: it put a limit on spending. For an investor, it means a midfield team is no longer condemned to lose money chasing rivals who spend twice as much. From 2026 the cap has risen to 215 million, but only because it now includes cost items that were previously excluded, such as depreciation: Formula 1 describes it as a broadly neutral increase.

The third is the stability of the commercial rules. The new Concorde Agreement, the contract that sets out how revenue is shared, was signed by all eleven teams in March 2025 and completed with its governance section, together with the FIA and Formula 1, in December 2025. It covers the seasons from 2026 to 2030. Five years of known rules are a guarantee few other sports can offer.

The deals that set the price

Media valuations are estimates. What puts a real price on teams are transactions, and over the last three years there have been plenty of them.

In January 2025 Audi completed the purchase of all the shares in Sauber from its previous owners, after dropping its original plan to stop at 75%. Two months earlier Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority, had signed an agreement to take a significant minority stake in the company. In June 2023 Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners and Maximum Effort, the investment firm led by Ryan Reynolds (with Rob McElhenney and Michael B. Jordan among its members), had bought 24% of Alpine for 200 million euros: back then the story was Hollywood discovering Formula 1, today it is that the deal valued the whole team at around 900 million dollars, little more than a third of the 2.45 billion Forbes estimated two years later.

Aston Martin is perhaps the most telling example. In July 2025 the carmaker Aston Martin Lagonda sold its last small holding in the team, in a deal that valued the outfit at around 2.4 billion pounds. In August 2026 Woody Johnson, chairman of the New York Jets, came in with a minority stake and became vice-chairman of the board, with the stated task of growing the team’s business in the United States.

Then there is Wolff’s sale to Kurtz, where we started. One detail deserves attention: Kurtz is not just any financier, he founded a company that already appeared on the Mercedes as a partner. The sponsor who becomes a shareholder is a step that says a lot about how companies look at this sport today.

TV rights and audience: why revenue will keep rising

Media rights are the heaviest item in Formula 1’s revenue, and the most dynamic one. In October 2025 the championship announced that its United States rights would move to Apple, exclusively, for five years starting in 2026. The parties did not disclose the fee; according to the American press it is around 140 million dollars a year, against the roughly 90 million ESPN used to pay.

Behind it is an audience that keeps widening. According to Nielsen Sports, in 2024 Formula 1 had 826.5 million fans worldwide, 12% more than the year before, with the strongest percentage growth in China. We looked at how this audience is changing, and what it asks of brands, in our analysis of the Global F1 Fan Survey.

On top of all this come Grands Prix built as events in their own right, with Las Vegas as the most extreme example: a race that Liberty Media promotes itself, collecting ticket and hospitality revenue directly.

What changes for sponsors

For a company assessing Formula 1 as a marketing channel, this growth has two sides. The first is obvious: the price goes up. A team worth six billion does not sell its sidepod the way it did when it was worth one, and owners who paid very high multiples need commercial revenue to grow in order to justify the investment. We set out the real numbers in how much it costs to sponsor a Formula 1 team.

The second side is less obvious. Buying visibility in Formula 1 today means associating your brand with a media property that is appreciating, not with a sport looking for backers. The Kurtz case, the sponsor turned shareholder, is the far end of a path that for most brands stops much earlier, but the logic is the same: get in where value is growing. It is no coincidence that, according to Ampere Analysis, total spending on sponsoring the championship and its teams will exceed 3 billion dollars in 2026, 15% more than the previous year.

One point is worth pausing on. Today’s valuations build in a very high expectation of growth: eight times revenue is a multiple that only makes sense if turnover keeps rising. So far it has. For sponsors, the right question is not so much whether Formula 1 is worth what it costs, but whether their own investment is built to take advantage of the phase in which that value is still taking shape.

Frequently asked questions about the value of Formula 1 teams

Which Formula 1 team is the most valuable?

Ferrari.
