Tires, brakes and rules

The lights are still off, the cars are on the formation lap and the TV director cuts to an aerial shot. Twenty cars swerving from one kerb to the other, one behind the other, like skiers in a slalom. Anyone watching Formula 1 for the first time thinks it is a game, or a problem. It is neither.

F1 cars swerve back and forth mainly to warm up their tires. At low speed tires lose temperature, and a cold tire has little grip. By steering left and right, the driver loads the tires sideways, makes them work and brings them back toward the right temperature. The same move also cleans off dirt picked up on track. Alongside the weaving, drivers accelerate and brake hard to heat the brakes.

What it does not do, despite what you sometimes read, is burn fuel to make the car lighter: that effect is negligible and it is not the point.

Why do F1 cars swerve and zig zag

There are three reasons, and they work together.

Tire temperature. A Formula 1 tire only performs at its best within a precise temperature window. Tire blankets heat it in the garage, but as soon as the car goes out and runs slowly, the surface cools. Weaving makes the tire scrub and flex against the tarmac, and the friction puts heat back where it is needed.

Cleaning. Off the racing line the track is covered in worn rubber, dust and small stones. Tires that run over it pick some of it up. Steering decisively helps shed that layer and get back to a clean surface.

Brakes. Carbon brakes only work well when they are hot. That is why, along with the weaving, drivers alternate sharp acceleration and hard braking, sometimes keeping light pressure on the brake while on the throttle.

When do drivers swerve

The best-known moment is the formation lap, the lap before the standing start. It is the last chance to bring tires and brakes up to temperature before the lights go out, when grip under traction and braking into the first corner is needed straight away.

The same happens behind the safety car. The race is neutralized, the cars run much slower than normal and the tires cool lap after lap. Drivers weave so as not to be caught with cold tires at the restart, which is one of the most delicate moments of the race. They also do it, to a lesser extent, under the virtual safety car and on qualifying out-laps.

Weaving matters even more when it is cold or wet: on a wet track the tire struggles to warm up, and a restart on cold tires can cost positions or end in the wall.

The rules: allowed, with judgment

Weaving is not banned, but it has to be done safely. The regulations forbid erratic or dangerous driving, and the stewards can penalize anyone who overdoes it or puts the car behind in trouble. On the formation lap, overtaking is not allowed, except to restore the starting order when a car has been delayed.

Behind the safety car the rules are even stricter: each driver must stay within ten car lengths of the car ahead and, once the safety car turns its lights off before pitting, can no longer accelerate or brake erratically, so as not to endanger the restart. Weaving is tolerated as long as it remains a way to keep tires warm, not a trick to make life difficult for others.

Tire blankets are not enough

You might wonder why all this movement is needed when the tires start out warm. The answer is that blankets heat the tire before the car leaves the garage, but can do nothing during the formation lap or behind the safety car. For a few years Formula 1 considered banning them to cut energy use, but the idea was postponed, and in 2026 they are still allowed, with precise limits: a maximum of 70°C and two hours of heating for slicks.

The new, narrower and lighter 2026 F1 tires have not changed this habit: even with less rubber to heat, tires still cool down at low speed and drivers keep weaving.

Not just Formula 1

Weaving is not exclusive to Formula 1. You see it in NASCAR during caution laps, in IndyCar and in endurance racing. The reason is always the same: cold tires mean less grip, and less grip means risk. Only the intensity changes, because every tire has its own temperature window and every car its own way of reaching it.

It is one of those details that say a lot about this sport: even a move that looks like a game is pure preparation. And anyone following Formula 1 closely, perhaps to assess Formula 1 sponsorship, soon learns that almost nothing on track happens by chance.

Frequently asked questions: why do F1 cars swerve?

Why do F1 cars swerve back and forth?

Mainly to warm up the tires, which lose temperature, and therefore grip, at low speed.
