Kevin Magnussen makes contact with Pierre Gasly’s Alpine and the stewards hand him ten seconds and two points on his super license. Only two points, but they take his tally to twelve, and twelve, in Formula 1, means staying at home. The Dane misses the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and becomes the first driver ever stopped by the penalty points system, introduced ten years earlier. Not for a big crash, but for an accumulation.

It is a good place to start if you want to understand how F1 penalties work, because it tells the most important part of the story: the system does not just punish the single mistake, it keeps the books. Sanctions range from five seconds served at a pit stop to disqualification from the results, by way of the drive-through, the stop-and-go, lost grid positions, reprimands and fines. They are decided by the stewards, who apply the FIA Sporting Regulations and the International Sporting Code.

Who decides: the stewards

At every Grand Prix the FIA appoints three to four stewards, one of whom chairs the panel, and the national federation organizing the race adds one more. The panel normally includes a former racing driver, who brings to the table the instinct of someone who has lived those situations from the cockpit. The race director reports suspicious incidents, but the decision is theirs alone, and they can also open an investigation on their own initiative.

The underlying principle is written in black and white in the 2026 regulations: no penalty, unless it is clear that a driver was wholly or predominantly to blame for the incident. When the blame is shared, or cannot be assigned, it is a racing incident and that is the end of it. For incidents in practice and qualifying there are two typical sanctions: deleting lap times and dropping the driver down the grid, which as a rule is served in Sunday’s race.

The penalties served during the race

In the race and in the Sprint, the stewards have four “pit lane” penalties at their disposal, each with a different weight.

The 5-second or 10-second penalty is served at the next pit stop: the driver enters the pit lane, stops in his pit box, and the mechanics cannot touch the car until the required seconds have elapsed. If the driver does not stop again before the checkered flag, the seconds are simply added to his race time. It is the most common penalty, the one that often decides a podium in the final laps.

The drive-through forces the driver to go through the pit lane without stopping, respecting the speed limit, normally 80 km/h. The stop-and-go is harsher: a ten-second stop in the pit box, with nobody allowed to work on the car. In both cases, from the moment of notification the driver can cross the finish line no more than twice before entering the pits, and cannot serve the penalty while the Virtual Safety Car or the Safety Car is deployed.

If a drive-through or a stop-and-go comes in the last three laps, the regulations convert it into time: 20 seconds for the former, 30 for the latter. The same applies to any penalty imposed after the checkered flag, with 5 and 10 seconds staying as they are. That is why the finishing order sometimes changes while the drivers are already on the podium.

Grid drops, reprimands and points: the penalties that come later

The grid penalty is the sanction that carries over from one weekend to the next. It can follow a driving offense, for example causing a collision in qualifying, but above all it has technical causes: each driver can use a limited number of power unit elements per season (three internal combustion engines, three turbochargers, two energy stores and so on, with one extra unit allowed in 2026, the first year of the new rules). The first element over the limit costs ten places, each subsequent one of the same type five more. Anyone who racks up more than fifteen places of penalties starts at the back, behind all the other classified drivers.

The reprimand looks like a slap on the wrist, and on its own it is. But the regulations keep count: at the fifth reprimand of the season, if at least four were given for driving infringements, a ten-place grid penalty is triggered.

Penalty points on the super license have existed since 2014. They stay on the license for twelve months, and anyone who reaches twelve within that period is suspended for the next race, as happened to Magnussen. Since 2026 the stewards’ guidelines reserve them for dangerous or reckless incidents, apparently deliberate moves that cause a collision and unsportsmanlike behavior: the FIA has chosen to use them less often, but with more weight.

Disqualifications, suspensions and fines

Disqualification from the results is the heaviest sanction the stewards can hand out during a weekend. The textbook recent case is Austin 2023: Lewis Hamilton, second across the line, and Charles Leclerc, sixth, were removed from the classification because the plank under the floor of their cars had worn beyond the permitted limit. No driving fault, just a non-compliant car. The rules are clear: the responsibility for complying with the regulations at all times lies with the team.

Fines mostly hit the teams. Exceeding the pit lane speed limit during practice and qualifying costs 100 euros for every km/h over the limit, up to a maximum of one thousand euros; in the race and in the Sprint, on the other hand, the same offense can cost anything from 5 seconds up to a stop-and-go. Since 2024 the maximum fine the stewards can impose in Formula 1 has risen to one million euros, four times the previous cap.

Above the stewards sits the FIA, which for the most serious violations can go as far as exclusion from the championship. It happened to Michael Schumacher in 1997, removed from the drivers’ standings after his clash with Jacques Villeneuve at Jerez, and to McLaren in 2007, excluded from the constructors’ championship and fined one hundred million dollars, minus the income lost through the exclusion, over the spy scandal involving Ferrari. Then there is a third track, the financial one: in 2022 Red Bull, for exceeding the 2021 budget cap, paid seven million dollars and lost 10% of its permitted aerodynamic testing time.

Track limits: the everyday penalty

If there is one sanction the public sees more often than any other, it is the one for track limits. A driver is considered off track when no part of the car is still touching the asphalt, and the white lines are part of the track while the curbs are not. In a race it works like a countdown: for the first two offenses the team receives a warning, on the third comes the black-and-white flag, the final warning, and from the next one the case goes to the stewards, who normally impose five seconds. In qualifying the punishment is more immediate: the lap time is deleted.

Can a penalty be appealed?

Less often than you might think. Penalties decided during the race (5 and 10 seconds, drive-through, stop-and-go, time penalties, reprimands and grid drops) cannot be appealed, and the same goes for places lost for replacing power unit elements. What remains is the right of review: within fourteen days of the decision a team can ask the stewards to reconsider the case, but only if it brings a new element that is significant, relevant and was unavailable at the time of the ruling. The bar is deliberately high.

Why penalties matter to sponsors too

Seen from the paddock, penalties are a sporting matter. Seen by those who invest, they are also a matter of visibility. Five seconds can move a car from the podium to fourth place, that is, from the most photographed moment of the weekend to a passing shot. A disqualification erases, after the fact, the very result the brand had already shared on its own channels. And a suspension removes from the grid, for a weekend, the driver around whom a company built its campaign.

It is no reason to stay away from F1, but it is a good reason to know its rules before signing: those who understand how the penalty system works can also read the risks of a results-based contract and build activations that do not depend on a single Sunday.
