In the world of two-wheel racing the Superbike World Championship is one of the most exciting and hard-fought series. Since it began in 1988, some riders have left an indelible mark, becoming symbols of talent, passion and dedication. Today I want to take you on a journey to discover the 10 best Superbike riders ever, telling not only the story of their achievements but also the curiosities and lesser-known details that shaped their careers and their lives.

The ranking is mine, and like every ranking it is open to debate. The multiple champions are at the top, but I wanted to leave room for riders who made history without winning a world title. All figures are updated to the 2026 season.

Carl Fogarty

With four Superbike world titles (1994, 1995, 1998, 1999), Carl Fogarty, known to everyone as «King Carl» or «Foggy», is a true legend. Famous for his aggressive riding style and a hunger for victory that never took a break, he won 59 races. He is remembered for his rivalry with Scott Russell and for bouncing back from spectacular crashes.

His retirement was forced by a serious crash at Phillip Island in 2000, but Foggy stayed in racing, including as the owner of his own Superbike team, Foggy Petronas (2003-2006). Beyond the wins, he stood out for his charisma and his bond with the fans, which made him an icon. Among his many successes in other categories, his 1990 Formula 1 TT and Senior TT wins on the Isle of Man deserve a mention.

Jonathan Rea

Northern Irishman Jonathan Rea won six consecutive world titles, from 2015 to 2020, all with Kawasaki, and he is the most successful rider in the history of the championship. Rea rewrote recent Superbike history with a consistency and work ethic that few others have matched. Just think: he has more titles, more wins, more podiums and more fastest laps than anyone else in the championship. A true dominator.

His technical precision and his ability to adapt to different conditions made him one of the most complete and respected riders in the paddock. After two seasons with Yamaha, in August 2025 he announced his retirement from full-time racing at the end of that year, after eighteen seasons in the championship. «If I can’t race to win, then it’s time to step away», he said. In 2026 he returned to Honda as a test rider: he raced at Donington as a wildcard and won the Suzuka 8 Hours.

Troy Bayliss

Three world titles (2001, 2006, 2008), all with Ducati, and a unique record: in 2006 the Australian became the first rider to win a Superbike World Championship race and a Grand Prix race in the same year, the MotoGP Valencia Grand Prix, which he rode as a replacement for Sete Gibernau.

His return to Superbike in 2006, after three seasons in MotoGP, and the title that followed made him a legend. Bayliss is the perfect example of perseverance: short of money, he had stopped racing and was working as a panel beater, until the turning point took him to Britain, where he won the British Superbike Championship in 1999. From there his career changed, at an age when many riders think about retiring. Troy is an icon for Ducati fans all over the world, proof that hard work and constant commitment put every goal within reach.

Noriyuki Haga

Noriyuki Haga, «Nitro Nori», is loved by fans for his spectacular riding style and the intensity of his battles on track. He never won the title, but he was runner-up three times: in 2000 and 2007 with Yamaha, in 2009 with Ducati. He left his mark on Superbike fans with his fighting spirit and his relaxed, slightly swashbuckling attitude in the paddock.

Nitro Nori knew how to get the most out of his bike, often less competitive than his rivals’ machines, and his indomitable spirit made him one of the most loved riders in Superbike history.

Doug Polen

Doug Polen dominated the early 1990s: world champion in 1991 and 1992 with Ducati, in 1991 he won 17 races in a single season, a record matched only by Jonathan Rea in 2018 and beaten by Álvaro Bautista in 2023. Polen was known for his meticulous bike preparation and his ability to push its performance to the limit, a demonstration of how much the understanding between rider and technology matters. Precision and method made him one of the most respected riders of his time.

Troy Corser

Troy Corser, «Mr. Superpole» for his knack of setting record times in qualifying, is another name that made Superbike history. Two world titles (1996 with Ducati, 2005 with Suzuki) and a long, rich career: his smooth style and elegance on track made him one of the riders most respected by the paddock and loved by fans.

Corser stayed competitive for a very long time and retired at the end of 2011, at almost 40. In Superbike he raced for six different manufacturers: Ducati, Yamaha, Suzuki, Aprilia, Petronas and BMW.

Colin Edwards

The «Texas Tornado» Colin Edwards won two Superbike world titles, in 2000 and 2002, both with Honda; in 1999 and 2001 he finished second, again on the Honda, four years of outstanding form. He then moved to MotoGP, where in twelve seasons he took 12 podiums, but never won a Grand Prix.

Beyond his talent on track, Edwards is remembered for his open, sociable character, which made him one of the most charismatic personalities in the paddock, and for his Texas ranch with its dirt track circuits, where he has trained many riders. His move from Superbike to MotoGP inspired many others to follow in his footsteps.

Raymond Roche

Raymond Roche was the first Frenchman to win the Superbike world title, in 1990 with Ducati, and he remained the only French Superbike world champion until Sylvain Guintoli’s title in 2014. His title was a historic moment for the championship and showed that talent and determination can beat even more highly rated rivals. Roche is remembered for his combative style and his ability to get the most out of his Ducati.

Ben Spies

In his rookie year, 2009, Ben Spies won the championship with 14 victories, setting a new standard for newcomers. His quick jump from American racing to dominating the Superbike World Championship amazed everyone, and his elbows-out cornering style had already earned him the nickname «Elbowz» in the United States. That season is considered one of the most extraordinary in Superbike history: Spies was also the last Superbike champion to move straight to MotoGP, before Toprak Razgatlıoğlu in 2026.

In MotoGP, as a factory Yamaha rider, he did not achieve as much, partly because of a series of physical problems that stopped him performing consistently. He won a single Grand Prix, the 2011 Dutch TT at Assen, in a season he finished fifth overall. We explain the differences between the two classes in our comparison of MotoGP and Superbike bikes.

Marco Melandri

I close the list with Marco Melandri, a rider who, despite many injuries, always showed unshakeable determination and passion. With a career spanning Grand Prix racing and Superbike, he showed great versatility: 250cc world champion in 2002 and runner-up in MotoGP in 2005. In Superbike he won 22 races, for a long time the record for an Italian rider, beaten only in 2026 by Nicolò Bulega.

He never won the Superbike title, but his wins and podiums speak for his talent and determination. He is remembered for his comebacks and his decisive overtakes, always with a calculated aggression.

Honourable mentions

Like every list, this one does not claim to be fair or complete. Many other extraordinary riders would have the numbers and credentials to make the top 10. Max Biaggi, two titles in 2010 and 2012 with Aprilia. Álvaro Bautista, champion in 2022 and 2023 with Ducati. Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, three titles in 2021, 2024 and 2025 before his move to MotoGP. And Nicolò Bulega, 2026 world champion: the first Italian to win the title with Ducati, in a season he dominated from the very first race.

Either way, every rider on this list has helped make the Superbike World Championship what it is today: a show of the highest level, where technique, courage and passion come together in every race. The season schedule is in our guide to the 2026 WorldSBK calendar, and if you are wondering what a world championship bike costs, the answer is in our article on how much a Superbike costs.
