On top of that aramid barrier sits one of the most photographed advertising spaces in sport, with precise rules on how logos can be attached to it.

Viewers at home mostly see colours and brands. The people who design it see a physics problem: giving a driver the time to get out of a burning car without restricting movement and without cooking them in the cockpit. The brands that buy it as sponsorship space see the only surface that stays on the driver once the helmet comes off, on the podium, in the press conference and in front of the paddock cameras.

From Nomex to made-to-measure aramid

The material that changed the history of racewear is Nomex, a meta-aramid fibre developed by DuPont in the early 1960s and first marketed in 1967. Its strength is easy to explain: it does not catch fire and does not melt, but above roughly 370 degrees it chars, forming a layer that slows the passage of heat towards the skin. An ordinary synthetic fabric, by contrast, melts and sticks to the body.

Today a Formula 1 suit is a sandwich of several layers of aramid. In the account Puma gave Autosport in 2019 from the Turin factory that makes its suits, the fibre sits between a flat outer surface designed for logos and a honeycomb structure that traps air and therefore insulates. By then the weight of an F1 suit had dropped from about 1.5 kilos to 700 grams: the elastic went, the zip was lightened, logos were printed instead of stitched. Eighty per cent of the suits coming out of that department were fully bespoke.

What the FIA 8856-2018 standard requires

For drivers in the Formula 1 World Championship, and in series such as Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula E and the WEC, Appendix L of the International Sporting Code requires the suit, gloves, long underwear, balaclava, socks and shoes to be homologated to FIA standard 8856-2018. The number that matters is not how long the fabric survives in the fire: it is the HTI24 index, the number of seconds it takes, under an 80 kW per square metre flame, for the temperature on the other side of the fabric to rise by 24 degrees. The minimums are:

suit: at least 12 seconds;

gloves: Formula 1 requires gloves homologated from 2023, which must reach 13 seconds, with the palm at 9.5;

shoes: 11 seconds;

underwear, balaclava and socks: at least 5 seconds.

With this standard, protection rose by around 20% for many items, and underwear, balaclavas and socks were put through the heat transmission test for the first time. The same Appendix adds a detail few people notice: in races with a standing start, single-seater drivers must wear gloves in a high-visibility colour that contrasts with the main colour of the car, so the starter can see them immediately if the car is stuck on the grid.

Bahrain 2020: the standard put to the test

The 8856-2018 standard became compulsory in Formula 1 in 2020, and on 29 November that year it got the test nobody wanted. On the opening lap of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Romain Grosjean‘s Haas went through the barriers, split in two and was engulfed in flames. According to the FIA investigation, Grosjean got out unaided after 27 seconds, with burns to the backs of both hands.

Suit, underwear, socks and balaclava did their job. According to what Alpinestars, which supplied his kit, told Autosport, all its items were already homologated to the new standard and some lasted up to three times the required minimum. The hands were the weak point: one of the FIA investigation’s recommendations was to improve the heat insulation of gloves, and since 2023 the standard has required newly homologated gloves to reach 13 seconds instead of 11 and 9.5 on the palm instead of 8. It is also the case that made it clear to everyone why protection is measured in seconds: in a crash like that, every extra second is time to unbuckle, free yourself and climb out.

Biometric gloves and cooling vests

The suit does not work alone. Since 2018 Formula 1 drivers’ gloves have carried a flexible biometric sensor 3 millimetres thick that measures heart rate and blood oxygen and sends the data to the medical team, so that after a crash doctors know straight away what condition the driver is in. Appendix L requires these devices to be homologated to another standard, FIA 8868-2018, and if they are built into a fireproof garment, that garment must meet both.

Heat is the other enemy. After the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix, when several drivers struggled to finish the race, the FIA introduced the driver cooling system for 2025: a pump and a thermal store in the car and a fireproof vest crossed by tubes carrying cold fluid. Teams must fit it when a «heat hazard» is declared, meaning the official weather service forecasts that during the race the heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, will exceed 31 degrees; drivers can still choose not to wear the vest. The first race with a declared heat hazard was Singapore 2025.

How many suits a driver uses in a season

An F1 suit is not something you wear all year. It wears out, it gets washed, it has to stay intact to guarantee its homologated protection, and it changes every time the sponsors change or a special livery arrives. In 2019 Puma said drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas went through about 40 suits a season, and that the raw materials alone cost about 2,000 euros per suit. These are figures from a single supplier and a few years old, but they give the order of magnitude: dozens of suits per driver, all made to measure, all homologated.

The suit as sponsorship space

For a brand, the suit has a quality no other surface has: it stays on the driver when the helmet comes off. On the podium, in interviews, in the media pen, in official photos, the logo on the chest or the collar is what ends up in the frame next to the driver’s face. That is why chest, collar, sleeves and belt are valued differently from the surfaces of the car, and why a driver’s personal sponsorship almost always goes through there. The same goes for the helmet, which has its own logic and which we covered in our guide to Formula 1 helmet sponsors.

Putting a logo on a homologated suit, however, is not like printing it on a hoodie. Appendix L states that embroidery sewn directly onto the suit must go on the outermost layer only, for better heat insulation; that the backing of badges and the thread used to attach them must be flameproof, with the thread compliant with ISO 15025 if the stitching goes through all the layers; and that printing and transfers may be done only by the suit manufacturer, without reducing its performance, with a certificate accompanying every customised garment. For a sponsor this means something practical: the timing and cost of the logo go through the team’s technical supplier, such as Puma in Formula 1, and need to be planned before the Grand Prix where you want to debut.

The suit is also the quickest way to tell a story. At the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, Ferrari dressed Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in Azzurro La Plata with Azzurro Dino details to celebrate 70 years in North America, on the weekend HP made its debut as title sponsor: a different suit, for three days, with a story to tell. Before that, the red and white Marlboro McLaren suits of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost and the blue and yellow Renault suits of Fernando Alonso’s 2005 and 2006 titles became images fans still associate with those brands today.

If you are considering a presence on a driver’s or a team’s suit, the starting point is understanding what each position is worth compared with the rest of the package: we explain it in our guide to what Formula 1 sponsorship costs and, for the full picture, on our page about Formula 1 sponsorship.

Frequently asked questions about the F1 uniform

            What is a Formula 1 driver's suit made of?

Several layers of aramid, the fibre family of the Nomex developed by DuPont: it does not catch fire or melt, but chars and slows the passage of heat.
