It is the most common misunderstanding in racetrack sponsorship: brands sign with the venue expecting to appear in the race coverage, then discover that on the days that matter for television the trackside boards, the title sponsorship and the main hospitality belong to the championship’s rights holder. The circuit, and therefore its sponsor, keeps the rest of the year. Used well, that is a great deal.

The theatre and the premiere: who sells what on a race weekend

The simplest way to understand it is to think of a theatre. The circuit is the theatre: you can hire it, put your name on it, live inside it all year round. The Grand Prix is the premiere, and the best seats on that night are sold by someone else.

In Formula 1 it is written in black and white by Liberty Media, which controls the championship’s commercial rights, in the annual report it files with the US SEC: under its circuit rights agreements, Formula 1 acquires from race promoters the right to sell trackside advertising and the race title sponsorship, Paddock Club hospitality (except at three events) and commercial use of the name of the event and of the circuit. Promoters keep ticket sales and, sometimes, concessions, secondary hospitality, local sponsorship and on-site activations.

In MotoGP the pattern is similar. The same Liberty Media report, which since 2025 covers MotoGP as well, explains that the championship reserves its commercial rights and grants some of them to the promoter on a case-by-case basis: generally tickets, certain advertising spaces, promotional activities and secondary hospitality. A public contract lets you read it clause by clause. In the text of the 2016-2020 promoter contract between Dorna (now MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group) and the Czech Republic Grand Prix, published in the Czech register of contracts, Dorna holds the exclusive right to manage the event’s advertising, signage, title sponsorship and hospitality. The promoter must remove, at its own expense, all advertising in and around the circuit at least one week before the race. It keeps institutional spaces, food and beverage and hospitality in agreed areas; the VIP Village stays with the championship.

Translated into commercial language: whoever buys a permanent board at a circuit does not, as a rule, buy the Formula 1 or MotoGP weekend. For that you negotiate with the championship, and it is a different negotiation, as we explained when we looked at what Las Vegas Grand Prix sponsorship includes. Mixing up the two is the quickest way to pay for an audience that will never see your brand.

What you actually buy when you sponsor a circuit

Take away the championship weekend and a circuit’s inventory falls into five families. Each one has its own commercial argument.

1. The circuit’s name

It is the most visible deal and the rarest. The Red Bull Ring, reopened in 2011 after Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz had bought and rebuilt the former A1-Ring, is the extreme case: not a rented name but an owned circuit. We covered what naming is worth, and its limits, in our article on naming rights for sports venues. Here a different point matters: the name you buy does not have to be the circuit’s.

2. The name of a venue inside the circuit

At the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, the 14,000-seat amphitheatre is called the Germania Insurance Amphitheater: a seven-year deal, announced in December 2019, with a Texas insurance company. According to the circuit, the brand reaches more than 400,000 concert-goers a year this way. None of them is there for a race. That is exactly the point.

3. Hospitality and corporate space all year round

Suites, rooms above the garages, the paddock on days without racing: these are spaces for conventions, client meetings and product launches, in a setting no hotel can offer. On Grand Prix days, however, the main hospitality passes to the championship, and anyone who wants to take clients to the race goes through the official packages, such as those for MotoGP hospitality.

4. The track as a product test bench

A track is where a product is tried, not described. Porsche understood this early: its first Porsche Experience Centre opened at Silverstone in July 2008, and in 2021 the Franciacorta centre, the eighth in the world, brought the same model to Italy with a 2.5 km circuit. The most radical case is buying the circuit outright: Ferrari has owned Mugello since 1988 and uses it for its own testing.

5. Content

A circuit is a production studio with grandstands around it. Track days, driving tests, filming for a campaign: the value lies in access, meaning the track days the contract guarantees, not in the signage. And it is access the circuit can sell, because on days without a championship the circuit answers to no one else.

The mistakes we see most often

In our experience, circuit sponsorships that disappoint almost always have one of these three causes, and none of them is the fault of whoever signs: they are mistakes the market makes easy.

Buying the wrong television. A permanent board works for people who visit the circuit all year round, not for people watching the Grand Prix. Silverstone welcomed 564,000 people over the four days of the 2026 British Grand Prix, the biggest Formula 1 event ever according to the circuit, after 500,000 in 2025: a huge audience, but on those four days trackside advertising is sold by the championship.

Signing without the calendar. Before the price you need the list of the year’s events, with the attendance of each one and who owns the rights on each date. An annual visitor total, without that detail, tells you nothing.

Forgetting activation. A board without guests, tests and content is an empty sticker on a wall. Circuit sponsorship pays off when the brand uses the circuit, not when it merely appears on it.

How we set up a circuit sponsorship

The method is simple to describe and hard work to carry out. First: map the rights day by day, event by event, to know what you are really buying. Second: choose the circuit for the audience of its events and the market it sits in, not for the fame of its Grand Prix. Third: build the activations (hospitality, product tests, content) and measure them as you would measure any investment.

It is the work we do every day as a sports sponsorship agency, from the negotiation with the circuit to the last day on track. You buy a circuit for the year, not for the weekend. Always.

Frequently asked questions about racetrack sponsorship

            What is racetrack sponsorship?

It is an agreement with the owner or operator of a circuit that gives a brand rights at the venue: the name of the track or of one of its facilities, permanent signage, hospitality spaces, track days for product tests and content.
