Ai Ogura dives up the inside at Turn 9, passes his team-mate Raúl Fernández and pulls away. Three laps earlier the two Trackhouse riders had passed the factory Aprilia of Jorge Martín together, and halfway through the race the device that lowers the rear of Ogura’s bike had got stuck for a lap. Under the chequered flag TT Circuit Assen records something that had not happened for twenty-two years: a Japanese rider winning in the premier class, the first since Makoto Tamada in 2004.

That it happened here has a certain logic. Assen is the only place where the World Championship has always been: it was on the calendar of the very first season, in 1949, and since then it has missed only 2020, cancelled because of Covid. They call it the Cathedral, and every page written here weighs a little more.

A hundred years of TT, from country roads to a race track

The first race was held on 11 July 1925 on public roads, a 28.4 km loop between the villages of Rolde, Borger and Schoonloo, east of the town, over cobbles and stretches of sand. The following year the TT moved south of Assen, still on open roads, and stayed there until 1955, when on 16 July a new 7.705 km track was opened, still partly on public roads but already much closer to a modern circuit. The most recent turning point came in 2006, when the northern loop was removed and the circuit became much shorter; after a final tweak, since 2010 the layout used by the bikes has been 4.542 km long, with 18 corners, twelve right-handers and six left-handers.

The calendar has had its rituals too. For decades the TT was held on a Saturday, for religious reasons, a tradition that lasted until 2015; since 2016 the race has been held on Sunday, a choice the organisers made to bring more people into the grandstands and more media exposure. 2025 closed the first century with record attendance, more than 200,000 spectators over the weekend, and with the award for best Grand Prix of the season, voted for by the teams and paddock stakeholders.

The layout: fast corners and a chicane that decides races

The charm of Assen lies in its fast corners and in the changes of direction taken at full lean, the ones where courage counts as much as the bike. Hoge Heide is a blindingly fast right-left, Ruskenhoek a right-hander where riders carry a huge amount of speed and Ramshoek a long left-hander they arrive at very fast, while Strubben, a hairpin where speeds drop to around 75 km/h, is one of the slowest points of the lap. Then there is the final chicane, the Geert Timmer, the last chance to overtake before the line.

That is where in 2015 Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez arrived side by side on the last lap. Márquez dived up the inside, the two touched and Rossi was forced to run straight through the gravel: he stayed upright, rejoined the track and won by 1.242 seconds. A chicane just a few metres long that has since become part of motorcycle racing’s collective memory, and that also gives its name to one of the most sought-after grandstands at the circuit.

The races that made TT history

Every circuit has its days, and Assen has collected quite a few. On 25 June 1977 Wil Hartog, starting tenth, won the 500cc race by six seconds from Barry Sheene and became the first Dutchman to win a premier-class Grand Prix; over 1.80 metres tall and always dressed in white, he was known to everyone as the white giant. In 2016 it was the rain that wrote history: the race was red-flagged after 14 laps, restarted over 12, and won by Jack Miller on the Marc VDS team Honda, the first win by a non-factory rider in the premier class since 2006.

The most recent years tell the story of Ducati dominance instead: Francesco Bagnaia won three times in a row, from 2022 to 2024, and in 2025 it was Marc Márquez’s turn, in the year of his new title. Then came 2026, with the Trackhouse one-two signed by Ogura and Fernández. A win that counts double in Japan, and that shows how this circuit keeps writing history rather than simply preserving it.

Where to watch the race: grandstands and VIP Village

First-timers at Assen usually ask which grandstand to choose. The Hoofdtribune, the main grandstand on the finishing straight, is the only covered one, and in the Netherlands at the end of June that is no small detail. The Geert Timmer grandstand looks straight onto the final chicane, the one from 2015, and has a big screen to follow the rest of the lap; the other grandstands, such as Haarbocht, Strubben, Stekkenwal and Ossebroeken, offer different viewpoints on the track. During the Grand Prix days, the town centre also hosts the TT Festival, free of charge, with live music and bikes over several days.

For those looking for a different experience there is the MotoGP VIP Village, the championship’s official hospitality: at Assen it has a private pavilion at the Ramshoek corner, with a view of the track, paddock tours and pit lane walks. We have put together on a dedicated page how to book the VIP Village and MotoGP hospitality at the Assen TT, and anyone who wants to understand what changes between the different access options can read the difference between the VIP Pass and the Paddock Pass.

Why Assen matters for brands too

A Grand Prix that brought more than 200,000 people over three days in 2025 and has a MotoGP contract until 2031, renewed in 2024 together with the Superbike one, is first of all a stable fixture. For a company it means being able to build an event that repeats year after year, usually on the last weekend of June: a chance to bring clients and partners inside a story a hundred years long, and not just to display a logo.

This is where hospitality stops being an expensive ticket and becomes a relationship tool, and that is why a Grand Prix like the TT often finds its way into the plans of those who work with motorsport. Anyone who wants to understand how to fit it into a wider strategy will find the starting point on our page about MotoGP sponsorship. The rest is decided by the track, as Ogura reminded everyone in 2026.

Frequently asked questions about TT Circuit Assen

            Where is TT Circuit Assen?

In the north of the Netherlands, in the province of Drenthe, just outside the town of Assen.
