Top speed, acceleration and the F1 comparison

Some single-seaters are best described by their top speed. Formula E is better described by its first two seconds. The GEN3 Evo, racing since the 2024-25 season, reaches around 320 km/h, less than a Formula 1 car, but from a standstill it hits 100 km/h in 1.86 seconds, a sprint that no other FIA single-seater could match when it was launched. And the GEN4, which debuts in the 2026-27 season, will go beyond 335 km/h.

The question «how fast is a Formula E car» therefore has at least three answers, and mixing them up is the most common mistake: top speed, acceleration and lap time. We set them out one by one, with the championship’s official figures.

Top speed: around 320 km/h with the GEN3 Evo, over 335 km/h with the GEN4.

Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 1.86 seconds with the GEN3 Evo, around 1.8 with the GEN4.

Lap time: in Monaco, in 2026, the pole for the first Formula E race was 14.5 seconds slower than the Formula 1 pole, on the same circuit.

Top speed, generation by generation

In twelve years Formula E’s top speed has risen by almost a hundred kilometres per hour, from 225 to around 320 km/h, and with the GEN4 the gap will exceed 110. Each generation of car has raised the power and, with it, the limit on the straight.

Generation

Racing from season

Maximum power

Top speed

GEN1

2014-15

200 kW

225 km/h

GEN2

2018-19

250 kW

280 km/h

GEN3 and GEN3 Evo

2022-23 (Evo from 2024-25)

350 kW

around 320 km/h

GEN4

2026-27

600 kW

over 335 km/h

Two clarifications help to read the table. Maximum power is not what is used for the whole race: with the GEN3 Evo the 350 kW are reserved for the qualifying duels and Attack Mode, while the race limit is 300 kW. With the GEN4 the figures rise to 600 kW in qualifying and Attack Mode and 450 kW in the race. And the speeds are theoretical maximums: how close a car really gets to that number depends on the circuit. How Formula E got from GEN1 to GEN4 is told in our history of Formula E cars.

Acceleration, where Formula E beats Formula 1

The electric motor delivers its torque instantly, and all-wheel drive does the rest. The GEN3 Evo is the first Formula E car with four-wheel drive, active at race starts, in the qualifying duels and in Attack Mode: according to the FIA and Formula E it goes from 0 to 60 mph in 1.82 seconds and from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.86; according to Formula E that is a sprint 30% quicker than a 2024 Formula 1 car. At its launch it was the quickest-accelerating FIA single-seater, a title that will pass to the GEN4.

The GEN4 pushes the limit a little further. All-wheel drive becomes permanent, active in every phase of the race, and the car goes from 0 to 100 km/h in around 1.8 seconds and from 0 to 200 in 4.4. It will be the only single-seater race car with four-wheel drive always engaged.

Over a lap: the Monaco comparison

Acceleration from a standstill, however, does not win races. Over a lap what counts is cornering speed, and there Formula 1, with far more downforce, remains in a different category. The cleanest comparison is Monaco, where the two series use the same 3.337-kilometre layout. In 2026 pole position for the first Formula E race went to Dan Ticktum in 1:26.551; pole for the Formula 1 Grand Prix went to Kimi Antonelli in 1:12.051. Fourteen and a half seconds apart, on the same track, in the same year: an average of around 139 km/h against 167.

The differences between the two series go well beyond performance, and we have set them out in our comparison of Formula E and Formula 1. Anyone who wants to know which category holds the absolute records will find the ranking in our article on the fastest motorsport.

Why a Formula E car does not go faster: three reasons

It is not a technical limit the championship cannot overcome. It is a choice, shaped by three factors.

1. The circuits. Formula E races mostly on street or temporary tracks laid out in cities: São Paulo, Jeddah, Berlin, Monaco, Tokyo and London, to name some of the 2025-26 rounds. Short straights and slow corners leave little room for top speed. The Formula E calendar explains better than any spec sheet why top speed is not the number that matters.

2. Energy. In a race the energy available is limited, and managing it is part of the driver’s job. With both the GEN3 and the GEN4 more than 40% of the energy used in a race is recovered under braking; with the GEN4 regeneration power rises from 600 to 700 kW. A driver who spends too much too early risks reaching the last lap without the charge to defend.

3. The tyres. The GEN3 Evo races on a single Hankook tyre for both dry and wet conditions, designed with durability and energy efficiency in mind too. It is a compromise that a Formula 1 car, with different compounds for each condition, does not have to make.

The indoor record

There is also a record that no other single-seater can claim. In July 2023, at ExCeL London, Jake Hughes reached 218.71 km/h on a 346-metre indoor straight, driving the GENBETA, a modified GEN3 boosted to 400 kW. It earned the Guinness World Records title for the fastest speed achieved indoors, beating the previous mark by more than 50 km/h. A curious fact, but one that captures the nature of a championship which in London races on a circuit that runs in and out of the ExCeL.

What it means for a brand

For a company, Formula E’s speed matters more as a story than as a number. A series whose cars sprint from a standstill faster than a Formula 1 car, which improves its performance with every generation and which recovers such a large share of its energy under braking offers technology, energy and mobility brands an argument that is concrete, verifiable and easy to communicate. For anyone looking for an urban audience and an association with innovation, it is hard to find a more coherent stage.

It is not the right choice for everyone.
