On 13 May 1950, on a former military airfield on the border between Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the future Queen Mother) watched the first race in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship. Nino Farina won it in an Alfa Romeo, from pole position. Seventy-six years later, in July 2026, the same place welcomed 564,000 spectators over four days: according to the circuit’s figures, the biggest event in the history of Formula 1.<\/p>\n

Between those two dates lies almost everything you need to understand the Silverstone circuit. Not just a fast and difficult track (which it is, very much so), but a place that has built up successive layers: the airfield, the drivers’ club, the Grands Prix, the industry that has grown up around it. Each of those layers can still be read, sometimes even in the names of the corners.<\/p>\n

From RAF base to home of British motorsport<\/h2>\n

Silverstone began life as RAF Silverstone, a base opened in 1943 where the crews of Wellington night bombers were trained. Once the war was over, the runways and perimeter roads became a racetrack almost by chance: in September 1947 a group of friends organised an impromptu race there and, the following year, the Royal Automobile Club leased the airfield to stage the Grand Prix, held on 2 October 1948 with hay bales marking out the track.<\/p>\n

From 1952 the circuit was run by the British Racing Drivers’ Club, which bought the land from the Ministry of Defence in 1971 and still owns it today. It is a detail that says a lot: the most important circuit in the United Kingdom belongs to an association of drivers.<\/p>\n

The corners of the Silverstone circuit and their names<\/h2>\n

The Grand Prix layout is 5.891 kilometres long and has 18 corners. Since 2011, when the new pit complex (the Silverstone Wing) opened, the start has been on the straight between Club and Abbey, which became Turn 1. Until then the first corner after the start was Copse, which is now Turn 9: a useful detail for anyone reading race reports from past decades.<\/p>\n

Read in sequence, the corner names make up a small atlas of the place. Abbey and Luffield recall the ancient Benedictine priory of Luffield, whose remains were found inside the circuit grounds, about 200 metres from Stowe. Copse takes its name from the small woods that surround that stretch, Maggotts from the nearby Maggot Moor. Becketts and Chapel recall the medieval chapel dedicated to Thomas Becket, which stood nearby and was demolished in 1943 precisely to build the airfield. Hangar Straight, the long back straight, owes its name to the RAF hangars that once stood beside it; Stowe to the school of the same name, just to the south; Woodcote to Woodcote Park, the Royal Automobile Club’s country club in Surrey.<\/p>\n

In sporting terms, the heart of the circuit is the Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel sequence: a series of high-speed changes of direction in which a Formula 1 car shows, perhaps better than anywhere else on the calendar, what downforce really means. Straight after it, Hangar Straight leads to the braking zone at Stowe, one of the most used overtaking spots, while Club closes the lap and brings the cars back onto the pit straight.<\/p>\n

\"Evolution<\/p>\n

Formula 1, MotoGP and more<\/h2>\n

The Formula 1 British Grand Prix will stay at Silverstone until at least 2034, under the ten-year agreement with the BRDC announced in February 2024; according to the British press it could be worth up to \u00a3300 million. Attendance, meanwhile, has grown year after year: 480,000 spectators in 2024, 500,000 in 2025, 564,000 in 2026. And the driver most closely tied to this track is Lewis Hamilton, who in 2024 won his ninth British Grand Prix here, the first driver in history to win the same Grand Prix nine times. Since 2010 Silverstone has once again hosted the MotoGP British Grand Prix, which returned from Donington Park. Not every edition has gone smoothly: in 2018 the race was cancelled because water was standing on newly laid tarmac. The contract with the championship has been extended until 2028, and in 2027 the race is scheduled for 13 to 15 August. The circuit’s calendar goes well beyond the two Grands Prix: national championships, track days and the Silverstone Festival, the big historic motorsport event that was called The Classic until 2022. Since 2019, next to the track, the Silverstone Museum has housed the BRDC archive and tells the story of the place and of British motorsport.<\/p>\n

The district around the track<\/h2>\n

But perhaps the most interesting thing about Silverstone is what lies outside the track. In the area known in England as Motorsport Valley, seven of the eleven Formula 1 teams have their headquarters or an operational base: Mercedes in Brackley, Red Bull in Milton Keynes and Aston Martin, which opened its new headquarters in 2023 right opposite the circuit, on the site where Jordan had set up in 1991. For a technical company, in other words, Silverstone is not just the venue of one race a year, but the centre of an industrial district where suppliers, engineers and teams work all year round.<\/p>\n

This is where the circuit stops being just a racetrack and becomes a medium. A weekend that brings more than half a million people to the circuit, in an area where the motorsport industry works all year round, offers a brand something that a simple television shot cannot: the time and the place to meet people, guests and clients, inside the event rather than in front of a screen. Seventy-six years after Farina’s win, Silverstone’s value lies less and less in the race alone and more and more in what grows around it.
