The Sachsenring circuit is summed up by a ratio: of its 13 corners, 10 are left-handers. It is the home of the MotoGP German Grand Prix, in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, just outside Chemnitz in Saxony, and in July 2026 it recorded more than 261,000 attendances over the weekend, its fifth consecutive crowd record.<\/p>\n<p>For a rider it is a track that wears out only one side of the tyre. For a company it is one of the best-attended weekends on the calendar, in Germany, Europe&#8217;s largest economy by nominal GDP. To work out which of the two matters to you, three facts are a good place to start.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Where<\/strong>: Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Saxony, in eastern Germany.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The track<\/strong>: 3.671 kilometres, 13 corners (10 left and 3 right), run anticlockwise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The calendar<\/strong>: German Grand Prix of the motorcycle world championship since 1998 (except 2020), with a contract until 2031; in 2027 it runs from 9 to 11 July according to the provisional calendar, the centenary year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The three lives of the Sachsenring circuit<\/h2>\n<h3>1. The road circuit (1927-1990)<\/h3>\n<p>The first race was held on 26 May 1927 on the Badberg-Viereck, a loop of public roads of about 8.7 kilometres that also ran through Hohenstein-Ernstthal. The name Sachsenring, the ring of Saxony, came ten years later. Between 1961 and 1972 the road course hosted the East German Grand Prix of the motorcycle world championship twelve times. As a road circuit it closed in 1990.<\/p>\n<h3>2. The permanent circuit (since 1996)<\/h3>\n<p>In 1996 the Sachsenring reopened as a permanent circuit, away from the town. The current layout is more recent: the Wasserfall descent arrived in 2001, and the 3.671-kilometre configuration, less than half the length of the historic course, has been in use since 2003.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The German Grand Prix (since 1998)<\/h3>\n<p>Since 1998 the Sachsenring has hosted the German Grand Prix of the motorcycle world championship, with the sole exception of 2020, when the race was cancelled because of the pandemic. The twistiest section is the Omega, a sequence of tight corners early in the lap. The most famous point, and the most feared, is Turn 11, the Wasserfall (the waterfall): a downhill right-hander taken at over 200 km\/h, with a 21-metre drop in 250 metres, according to figures released by Ducati.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty is not only the gradient. After a long series of left-handers, the right side of the tyre does little work and cools down; when the first real fast right-hander arrives, the tyre on that side has less grip than the rider expects. It is one of the reasons Turn 11 has historically been one of the best-known crash spots on the calendar.<\/p>\n<h2>The king of the Sachsenring<\/h2>\n<p>No rider has tied his name to this track like Marc M\u00e1rquez. In 2025, by winning the Grand Prix, he reached 12 wins at the Sachsenring across all classes, beating Giacomo Agostini&#8217;s record. In 2026 he won again, Sprint and Grand Prix, from pole: his tenth premier-class win at this circuit, and his thirteenth across all classes.<\/p>\n<h2>The crowd: five records in a row<\/h2>\n<p>The German Grand Prix is one of the best-attended weekends in the motorcycle world championship. In 2025 the Sachsenring recorded 256,441 attendances, a circuit record; in 2026 it passed 261,000, the fifth consecutive record. These figures come from the organiser, ADAC, and add up the admissions for every day of the weekend: they do not count individual people.<\/p>\n<p>For a brand looking at Germany it is a figure worth weighing: more than a quarter of a million attendances in a single weekend.<\/p>\n<h2>Who the Sachsenring works for, and who should look elsewhere<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who it works for.<\/strong> For companies selling into the German market, or into German-speaking countries, the German Grand Prix is a natural fit: a weekend with a very large crowd, in the heart of an industrial market, where bringing clients and partners into hospitality makes commercial sense even before it does anything for the brand&#8217;s image.
