Meaning, history and how it works today

NASCAR stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. It is the organization that, since 1948, has written the rules, drawn up the calendars and awarded the titles of its stock car series in the United States, starting with its most important championship, the NASCAR Cup Series.

Many acronyms in motorsport stand for a federation. This one also stands for a company: NASCAR has been controlled by the France family since the day it was born, and in April 2026 it appointed, for the first time, a chief executive from outside the family. To understand what NASCAR really means today, it helps to read the acronym in three ways: as words, as history and as a structure.

The acronym: National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.

The birth: a meeting on December 14, 1947, at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach, Florida, and formal incorporation on February 21, 1948.

Today: three national series (Cup Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series) and, in 2026, a Cup championship of 36 points races, from the Daytona 500 on February 15 to the Homestead-Miami finale on November 8.

The NASCAR acronym, word by word

National Association

A national association, at least in name. The word should not mislead anyone: NASCAR is neither a public body nor a federation elected by its members, but a private company that sets the rules of its own series, sells their television rights and manages their sponsorships.

Stock Car

Literally, a car taken from a dealer’s stock: originally a stock car was a production car, unmodified. It is no coincidence that the series from which the premier championship grew, in 1949, was called Strictly Stock. By the late 1980s, however, NASCAR race cars only looked like production cars. Today, with the Next Gen introduced in the Cup Series in 2022, underneath the bodywork there is a racing chassis with many parts from single-source suppliers, the same for every team; the engine, on the other hand, still comes from each manufacturer, and the bodies recall the Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota models: Camaro, Mustang and Camry. The technical details are in our guide to the cars NASCAR uses.

Auto Racing

Car racing, with no further qualification. The classic image is the oval, and ovals remain the heart of the calendar, but NASCAR also races on road courses and, in 2026, on a street circuit laid out inside Naval Base Coronado in San Diego.

How NASCAR was born: four dates

1. December 14, 1947: the Streamline Hotel meeting

Bill France Sr., a mechanic, driver and race promoter, brings drivers, car owners and organizers together at the Streamline Hotel in Daytona Beach. Stock car racing already has a following, above all in the southern United States; the aim is to give it a single organization, with common rules and a common championship.

2. February 15, 1948: the first race

The first race run under the NASCAR name takes place on the Daytona Beach course, partly on the sand and partly on the coastal road, and it is won by Red Byron in a Ford. It comes six days before the company exists on paper.

3. February 21, 1948: incorporation

NASCAR is formally incorporated, with Bill France Sr. as president. In December the idea had been discussed; now the idea has a charter.

4. June 19, 1949: the forerunner of the Cup Series is born

At Charlotte, on a three-quarter-mile dirt oval, the first race of the Strictly Stock division is held, the forerunner of today’s Cup Series. Glenn Dunaway is first across the line, but post-race inspection finds altered rear springs and the win goes to Jim Roper. NASCAR’s premier championship, in other words, begins with a disqualified winner.

One championship, many names

For almost half a century the name of the premier championship was also a product for sale. From 1971 to 2003 the series was called the Winston Cup, after R.J. Reynolds’ cigarette brand; then came Nextel (2004-2007), Sprint (2008-2016) and Monster Energy (2017-2019).

Since 2020 NASCAR has done without a title sponsor for its premier championship: the series is simply called the NASCAR Cup Series and the big brands come in as Premier Partners, a partnership tier shared by several companies. The second series, on the other hand, still sells its name: since 2026 it has been the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, formerly the Xfinity Series, and O’Reilly is the fourth brand to give it its name after Anheuser-Busch, Nationwide and Xfinity.

It is a detail that says a lot. In NASCAR even the name of a championship is sponsorship inventory, and anyone who wants to understand how brands work in this world today will find the list of NASCAR sponsors for 2026, with Premier Partners, teams and title sponsors.

How NASCAR works today

The three national series

NASCAR Cup Series: the premier championship, home of the Daytona 500.

NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series: the second series, where up-and-coming drivers race and, in a limited number of events, Cup drivers too.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series: the pickup truck series.

Alongside the three national series there are regional and international championships, such as the NASCAR Euro Series, which in 2026 ran twelve races over six weekends on European circuits, from Valencia to Zolder. Anyone choosing between the three main series will find a comparison in our guide on which NASCAR series to sponsor.

The 2026 Cup Series season

The 2026 calendar has 38 events: 36 points races and two non-points events, the Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium and the All-Star Race. The points season opens with the Daytona 500 on February 15 and closes at Homestead-Miami on November 8. The dates of every race are in our 2026 NASCAR Cup Series calendar.

The title: the return of the Chase

In 2026 NASCAR changed the way it awards the title and brought back the Chase, the format without eliminations used from 2004 to 2013. After 26 regular-season races the top 16 in the standings enter the Chase, points are reset just once and the champion is decided over the last 10 races. A win no longer guarantees a place; the standings do. In return it is worth more: 55 points instead of 40.

Stage racing

Since 2017 races have been split into stages, usually three. At the end of the first two, the top ten score points, from 10 for the winner down to 1 for tenth, and a driver who wins both stages and the race can take home up to 75 points in a three-stage race. How long a race lasts, and why the answer depends on the track, is explained in our guide on how long a NASCAR race is.

Who runs it

NASCAR is a private company controlled by the France family. Jim France, the founder’s son, remains chairman and majority owner; in April 2026 the chief executive role passed to Steve O’Donnell, the first chief executive from outside the family in the organization’s 78 years, alongside Ben Kennedy, Jim France’s great-nephew, as chief operating officer. Since 2019, when it bought International Speedway Corporation for about 2 billion dollars, NASCAR has also owned many of the tracks it races on, from Daytona to Talladega.

Who broadcasts it

From 2025 to 2031 the Cup Series races are split between four television and streaming groups: FOX, Amazon Prime Video, TNT Sports and NBC, which shows the final part of the season, Chase included. Together with the deal with The CW for the second series, the total value is about 7.7 billion dollars according to Sports Business Journal: a figure reported by the press, not announced officially.

NASCAR outside the United States

NASCAR has tried several times to step beyond American borders. Between 1996 and 1998 it took three exhibition races, with no points, to Japan: two at Suzuka and one at Motegi. On June 15, 2025, the Cup Series raced in Mexico City, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, in its first points race outside the United States since 1958: Shane van Gisbergen won it. In Europe there is the Euro Series.

Its heart, though, is still American. The calendar, the audience and the television contracts all speak to the United States, and that is where any marketing reasoning has to start.

What NASCAR means for a brand

For a company, NASCAR means something precise: access to the US market, built race after race. The sponsorship model is different from Formula 1’s. On a car the primary sponsor, the one that takes the hood and sets the paint scheme, can change from one race to the next; alongside it there are the associate sponsors, with smaller spaces, and at championship level the official partners and the Premier Partners. Costs and packages are in our guide to NASCAR sponsorship in 2026.

Who it works for

For brands that sell in the United States, or that want to enter it with distribution already in place. In our experience, a NASCAR sponsorship pays off when the logo is backed by stores, promotions and hospitality for customers and distributors in the race cities.

Who should look elsewhere

Companies with no distribution in the United States, or looking for visibility spread across several continents. A championship with a global calendar, such as Formula 1 or MotoGP, may reach their audience more effectively. In both cases the same rule applies: television exposure is a useful yardstick for comparing two packages, but the return is measured in business results, meaning contracts, sales and new distributors.

Anyone weighing up this step can read on our NASCAR sponsorship agency page how we support brands, from choosing the series to activation.

Frequently asked questions about NASCAR

            What does NASCAR stand for?

NASCAR stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.
