That was how he appeared, at first, in the results of kart races. Betsch is his mother Corinna&#8217;s surname, and the boy who carried it had another surname, a much heavier one, which the family preferred to keep away from the paddocks of junior racing. Then came Mick Junior. Then, at sixteen, his real surname: <strong>Mick Schumacher<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>His whole career can be told as an attempt to turn that surname into a starting point rather than a finish line already written by someone else. Two titles in the junior formulas, two seasons in Formula 1 with Haas, three podiums in the World Endurance Championship, and since 2026 a second life in the United States, in IndyCar. It is not the arc many people expected. It is, perhaps, more interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In short<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mick Schumacher won the <strong>European Formula 3 Championship in 2018<\/strong> and <strong>Formula 2 in 2020<\/strong>, both with Prema.<\/li>\n<li>In Formula 1 he raced for <strong>Haas in 2021 and 2022<\/strong>, scoring 12 points in his second season.<\/li>\n<li>After two years as Mercedes reserve driver and two seasons in the WEC with Alpine, he has raced in <strong>IndyCar<\/strong> since 2026: in 2027 he will drive for Meyer Shank Racing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>A name to keep in your pocket<\/h2>\n<p>The son of Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula 1 world champion, started karting under his mother&#8217;s surname precisely to stop every race of his from becoming news. In 2014 he entered as Mick Junior, and that year he finished second in the karting world championship in his category.<\/p>\n<p>The move to single-seaters came in 2015, in German Formula 4, with the Dutch team Van Amersfoort. That is where the surname returned to the bodywork. From then on every lap became a comparison, sometimes explicit and more often implied, with what his father had done at the same age. Ballast that no technical regulation calls for.<\/p>\n<h2>Prema, two titles in three years<\/h2>\n<p>The turning point came with Prema, the team based in Grisignano di Zocco, near Vicenza. In 2018 Mick won the European Formula 3 Championship with eight wins, sealing it at Hockenheim with a race to spare. Two years later, again with Prema, he took the <a href=\"https:\/\/rtrsports.com\/en\/blog\/why-formula-2-is-the-greatest-payee-of-formula-1s-skyrocketing-fame\/\">Formula 2<\/a> title at the final round, in Sakhir, in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Two championships in three seasons, in the two categories that prepare drivers for Formula 1. These are not the results of a famous son. They are simply results, and Haas signed him for 2021 even before the final race in Sakhir.<\/p>\n<h2>Formula 1 with Haas<\/h2>\n<p>The 2021 Haas was a team that had chosen not to develop its car in order to focus on the 2022 rules, and Mick&#8217;s first season ended without points, just like his teammate&#8217;s. 2022 went differently: at Silverstone he finished eighth, his first points in Formula 1, and a week later in Austria he was sixth, his best result. He ended the championship with 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>It was not enough. At the end of 2022 the team did not renew his contract, and the name that had opened so many doors for him could not keep one of them open. It is a moment anyone who works in motorsport knows well: attention is bought with history, a seat is kept with the stopwatch.<\/p>\n<h2>Mercedes, Alpine and the American turn<\/h2>\n<p>In 2023 Mick became reserve driver for Mercedes, the team with which his father had ended his career. In 2024 he added a real seat in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine, and on 15 September, at the 6 Hours of Fuji, he took the Alpine A424 to third place: the A424&#8217;s first podium in the Hypercar class. At the end of 2024 he left Mercedes, in 2025 he stayed in the WEC, with two third places at Imola and Spa, and in November 2025 he announced the sharpest change of his career: IndyCar, with Rahal Letterman Lanigan and the number 47 Honda.<\/p>\n<p>The first American season was that of a true rookie, on road courses and ovals he did not know. At the Indianapolis 500 he finished eighteenth, on the lead lap, and was named the race&#8217;s Rookie of the Year. At Nashville he took eighth place, his best result of the year, and he finished the championship twenty-third, second among the rookies behind Dennis Hauger. On 4 September 2026 Meyer Shank Racing announced him for 2027 in the number 66 Honda. This is how a driver&#8217;s personal sponsorship works, and it is different from a team&#8217;s. The brand does not buy a car or a championship, it buys a person: when the person changes team, the brand follows.<\/p>\n<p>In our view, the Schumacher name brings a company a level of attention that few other surnames in motorsport can guarantee, in Europe as in the United States. But Mick&#8217;s story also shows the other side: the name opens doors, results decide how long they stay open. A well-built sponsorship takes both into account, and does not bet on the first alone.
