Six years later it has a charter signed in 2024 by every team on the grid at the time, a women’s series in its fourth season and a champion, Alisha Palmowski, who sealed the title with three races to spare. It is not yet a different paddock. But it is no longer just a campaign.

For sponsors, this story matters for a practical reason: the Formula 1 audience has changed faster than the paddock, and the brands that understood this early have found opportunities that did not exist in the motorsport of ten years ago.

In short

We Race As One was launched on 22 June 2020; three days later came a foundation started with one million dollars donated by Formula 1’s then chief executive, Chase Carey.

On 26 November 2024 Formula 1, the FIA and all ten teams signed a diversity and inclusion charter, the first recommendation of the Hamilton Commission.

F1 Academy, which started racing in 2023, has had four champions: Marta García, Abbi Pulling, Doriane Pin and, in 2026, Alisha Palmowski.

We Race As One: from campaign to programme

We Race As One was announced on 22 June 2020, on the eve of a season restarting after the pandemic shutdown. At the Austrian Grand Prix on 5 July, the cars carried a rainbow dedicated to frontline workers and the message against racism appeared around the track. Three days later a foundation was also set up to fund internships and apprenticeships for underrepresented groups: it was started with one million dollars donated personally by Chase Carey, then chairman and chief executive of Formula 1, and the FIA added one million euros.

The first concrete measures arrived in 2021: ten engineering scholarships with six British and Italian universities, for students from underrepresented groups, and six internships within the Formula 1 organisation.

There was no shortage of criticism, and the harshest came from the driver closest to the issue. In July 2022, at the Austrian Grand Prix, after reports of abuse and harassment in the crowd, Lewis Hamilton said that We Race As One had been “just words”, with no funding and no programme capable of really changing things.

The Hamilton Commission and the charter signed by every team

In 2020 Hamilton set up the Hamilton Commission with the Royal Academy of Engineering, a study into why so few Black people work in British motorsport. The report was published on 13 July 2021: Black people make up less than 1% of those working in Formula 1, and the report set out ten recommendations for change.

The first called for a diversity and inclusion charter. It arrived on 26 November 2024: Formula 1, the FIA and all ten teams signed a joint document, developed with the support of the Royal Academy of Engineering and built on four pillars: attract, retain, create and engage. Mission 44, Hamilton’s foundation, supports its implementation, and the existing working group has become an implementation group, tasked with delivering measurable results. We have written about Hamilton’s career and commitment in our profile of Lewis Hamilton.

F1 Academy: four seasons, four champions

F1 Academy was announced in November 2022 and started in 2023, with the aim of developing female drivers towards the higher categories. Since March 2023 it has been run by Susie Wolff, a former racing driver. The champions have been Marta García in 2023, Abbi Pulling in 2024, Doriane Pin in 2025 and Alisha Palmowski in 2026, crowned in Austin on 24 October. Since 2024 every Formula 1 team has supported a driver in its own colours: in 2026 the ten established teams do so, while Cadillac will join in 2027. The champion receives 10 superlicence points.

The number that explains why it is needed is a simple one: since 1950 only five women have been entered for a Formula 1 Grand Prix, and just two have started, Maria Teresa de Filippis and Lella Lombardi, the only one to have scored points, half a point in Spain in 1975. The last start by a woman in a Grand Prix dates back to 1976. We covered this in our article on women in Formula 1.

Doriane Pin, the 2025 champion, was then chosen by Mercedes as a development driver for 2026: a decision by the team, not a prize from the series, but it is exactly the kind of step F1 Academy was created to make possible.

What is in it for sponsors

F1 Academy is also a sponsorship case. In February 2024 Charlotte Tilbury became an official partner of the series: the first female-founded beauty brand to do so and, for the company, its first global sports sponsorship. It put its colours on one of the 2024 cars, driven by the French racer Lola Lovinfosse. In 2026 Sephora arrived, backing the Spanish driver Natalia Granada. For brands like these, motorsport was not an obvious territory. It has become a possible one.

The reason lies in the audience. According to Nielsen research from December 2024, women made up 41% of Formula 1 fans. It is a figure that widens the range of brands that can speak to this audience credibly, and we explored it further in our article on women and sports sponsorship.

The limit, however, needs to be stated. Associating a brand with inclusion only works if there is a measurable commitment behind it, because the same audience that rewards consistency quickly spots a cosmetic exercise. In my experience, the companies that get the most out of it are those that support a programme, a driver or a scholarship and tell that story for years, not for one season. We explain the basic rules for entering this world on our page on Formula 1 sponsorship.

Diversity also runs through the calendar

Then there is geographical diversity. On 13 October 2026 Formula 1 announced a ten-year agreement for an African Grand Prix, at a new circuit in Bugesera, Rwanda, with its debut expected in the early 2030s. The last World Championship race in Africa remains the one at Kyalami, South Africa, on 14 March 1993. We wrote about it in our article on the African Grand Prix in Rwanda.

Where things stand in 2026

Today’s paddock does not yet look like its audience. But since 2020 Formula 1 has moved from slogans to a document signed by every team, from campaigns to scholarships, from a newly born women’s series to four champions. It is the same difference that separates a cosmetic sponsorship from one that lasts.

Frequently asked questions about Formula 1 and inclusion

What is We Race As One?

We Race As One is the initiative launched by Formula 1 on 22 June 2020 against racism and inequality, and to thank those facing the pandemic.
