That rally returned to the surrounding area an economic impact measured at 13.8 billion lire, roughly €7.13 million. The ratio between what the public body spent and what the territory took in is 1 to 46.9.

The number is worth holding on to, because it answers with unusual precision the question almost every sponsorship negotiation carries around without saying out loud: what a sports sponsorship is actually worth. Not what it costs — the contract says that — but what comes back, and in what form.

The case is the Emilia-Romagna region’s sponsorship of the World Ducati Weekend 2000, a project developed with RTR Sports Marketing as consultant and awarded the ESCA Italian Sponsorship Award as the Italian sports sponsorship project of the year. It is twenty-six years old, and that is exactly what makes it useful: it is one of the few cases where time has already delivered its verdict.

Territorial sponsorship, and why it is a different animal

It helps to name the thing before taking it apart. Call it territorial sponsorship: the arrangement in which the sponsor is not a brand looking for visibility in front of an audience, but a place looking for visitors inside one. The buyer changes, and once the buyer changes everything downstream changes with it. The objective is not awareness, it is the overnight stay. The KPI is not the contact, it is the physical presence of a person who sleeps, eats and spends within thirty kilometres of the event.

The distinction sounds like a technicality and is in fact the reason this case measures so cleanly. When the sponsor is a tourism authority, the return does not have to be estimated through advertising-equivalence models: it is counted. Occupied rooms are a fact, not a projection. It is also why 1:46.9 should not be read as the promise of sponsorship in general — read it as what happens when the expected return is commercial and direct, and the activation is engineered to produce it.

The problem Emilia-Romagna had in 2000

At the turn of the millennium the Romagna tourism industry was living through a phase of maturity: consolidated products, laborious to renew, and a growing difficulty in reaching customer segments the Riviera had never considered its own. The regulatory framework, though, offered a precise instrument. Regional law 7/98 on tourism promotion — whose political passage carries the signature of Vasco Errani, at the time the region’s tourism councillor — allowed projects submitted by private entrepreneurs to access public funding, on condition that the offer was designed for a specific clientele and that a measurable impact on hotel accommodation was guaranteed.

That condition — measurable impact — is the reason this case can be told today with numbers in hand rather than with adjectives. The law obliged someone to measure. The project was built around the obligation.

The target identified was the motorcycle tourist, and inside that segment the Ducati owner. It was not a romantic choice. Someone travelling by bike does not sleep in a campsite, because a motorcycle rarely carries a tent; he has a medium-to-high income, deducible from the plain fact that a Ducati costs appreciably more than rivals of the same displacement; if the hospitality works he comes back, and comes back with family and friends, this time by car; he is looking for nightlife, art, routes to ride; and he arrives from every corner of the world, which makes him an involuntary but effective promoter of the places he has ridden through.

Added up, those traits describe a high-spending customer nobody was courting. The potential was already visible in the numbers of the previous edition of the rally: 10,000 participants, more than 25,000 attendances, and a geographic distribution that overlapped with the region’s markets of interest (Italy 38%, Germany 15%, rest of Europe 36%, United States 3.5%).

Why the World Ducati Weekend specifically

The World Ducati Week is the global gathering of Ducati owners, staged every two years to strengthen the sense of belonging to the community around the marque. The 2000 edition ran from 9 to 11 June with the Misano Adriatico circuit as its base, and even then the programme was that of a festival rather than a rally: concerts, rides along the Riviera, tastings, stunt shows, Formula 1 against Superbike, factory and Ducati Museum visits, track sessions, safe-riding courses, meetings with the Ducati Corse riders, technical seminars.

For the region that platform delivered two things at once. The first was concentrated access to the target: thousands of qualified motorcycle tourists in the same place, over the same weekend, out of high season. The second, less obvious and far more valuable, was a role in designing the event — the chance to make the programme serve tourism objectives, instead of stopping at a logo applied to something other people had already shaped.

That is the difference between buying visibility and buying influence over the format. In our experience it is almost always there that a sponsorship decides whether it will produce something or remain, precisely, a sticker.

The objectives, stated up front

The region entered the project with its objectives written down: develop a new tourism product capable of interesting thousands of customers never reached before; encourage a form of tourism that pulled hard against seasonality and could be folded into the Riviera’s existing offer; promote the bond between Emilia-Romagna and engines, which for cars carries the name Ferrari and for motorcycles the name Ducati; use that growing segment to bring visitors inland as well, into the villages and historic centres; test new distribution and promotion channels; reach countries that had stayed at the margins of the institutional promotional campaign; and bring roughly 20,000 people to the Riviera for stays of one to seven nights.

The last of these is the only objective expressed as a number. It will also be the only one that allows anyone, after the fact, to say whether the project worked — and by how much.

How the activation was built

The regional intervention made it possible to bring in Promozione Alberghiera of Rimini, the largest hoteliers’ cooperative on the Riviera. Its presence translated not only into the availability of one of the biggest accommodation networks in Italy, but into an organisational machine able to lift from Ducati every question concerning the hospitality of participants: secure storage for the bikes, information material about the region’s destinations inside the hotels, dedicated front-desk staff.

On the tools side, the project produced 50,000 promotional postcards in several languages, each carrying the booking reference, 4,000 posters and window bills, a dedicated mark applied across every piece of material, package brochures extended to the whole of Emilia-Romagna, a dedicated section on the Ducati website with direct booking, and a postal mailing to the list of Ducati customers and enthusiasts.

Distribution followed the brand’s channels rather than the tourism industry’s: dedicated displays in the 40 Ducati Stores and at dealers across Italy, Germany, Great Britain, the United States, Oceania, South America and Asia; web promotion to selected lists of official clubs; a presence at international fixtures, including gazebos outside the paddock at the 2000 Superbike World Championship rounds; stands at EICMA and the Bologna Motor Show; activation of the Ducati press office and coordination with importers worldwide to promote “the land of engines”. Even Ducati University became a channel: at the sessions organised at selected universities, alongside the history and the technology of the marque, the tourism packages were presented too.

It is worth noticing what is missing from that list: there is no institutional image campaign. Every instrument had a booking mechanism inside it. The activation did not communicate the territory, it sold it.

The results, measured

The most tangible result sits in the attendance figure: 23,000 entrants and 17,000 registered motorcycles (source: Ducati Motor S.p.A.), against the 20,000 visitors set as the objective.

Calculating the total economic impact of an event like this is a hard exercise, and part of it stays by definition unmonitorable. Confining the count to what could be objectively measured, participants’ spending on accommodation came to 7.176 billion lire (around €3.71 million). To that is added the non-hotel estimate: at an average spend of 60,000 lire per person per day the figure is 6.624 billion lire (around €3.42 million). Both values assume an average stay of 3.2 days and account for companions, estimated at 0.5 people for every entrant (source: Promozione Alberghiera Rimini).

The total is 13.8 billion lire, roughly €7.13 million of economic impact generated on the territory.

Alongside it sits the media return. Research commissioned by Ducati from the media evaluation firm Immagine & Sport measured the television presence earned by the event and by Emilia-Romagna as its stage: 2 hours, 4 minutes and 24 seconds in total, between dedicated features and slots inside sports programming. That figure is never monetised in the model — which is what makes 46.9 an estimate on the conservative side, not an inflated one.

Investment against impact

The funding actually disbursed by the Emilia-Romagna region in favour of the World Ducati Weekend 2000 was 294.2 million lire, around €151,900. Set against 13.8 billion lire of impact, the cost/benefit ratio is 1 to 46.9: for every euro invested, almost forty-seven euros returned to the territory.

The project earned RTR the ESCA Italian Sponsorship Award for the sports category, presented on 8 February in Milan at IULM University. “The idea came from the need of the Romagna tourism industry to identify interesting and innovative offers for customer segments that had never considered Emilia-Romagna, and the Riviera in particular, as somewhere to spend a holiday,” explained Riccardo Tafà, managing director of RTR, at the time. “On that basis we identified the motorcycle tourist as the target, the Ducati owner specifically: a profile that under marketing analysis showed considerable potential in terms of tourism demand.”

On method, Carlo Merlini, the project lead for RTR, pointed to the legislation as the starting point: “After a close study of law 7/98, RTR built the programme through which Ducati Motor’s activities, and the World Ducati Weekend in particular, could serve at the same time as powerful instruments for the tourism promotion of the Romagna Riviera and of the entire region.”

The collaboration also had a tail the model never accounted for: Ducati and the region mapped twenty touring routes to be ridden by motorcycle along the most characteristic stretches of Emilia-Romagna, later collected in a book and given a promotional programme of their own. It is the cleanest example of what we have elsewhere called the flywheel effect — the value a sponsorship keeps generating after the contract has closed, and which no end-of-campaign accounting ever captures.

Twenty-six years on: what the case says today

The most interesting test is not in the numbers from 2000, but in the ones that came afterwards.

In July 2024 the World Ducati Week recorded more than 94,000 attendees from 86 nations at its twelfth edition, held at Misano from 26 to 28 July. In 2026, from 3 to 5 July, the centenary edition — Ducati was founded on 4 July 1926 — brought 118,036 attendees from 94 countries to the Misano World Circuit, making it the best attended and most international edition ever staged. In the meantime the company itself changed shape: since 2012 Ducati Motor Holding has been controlled by Automobili Lamborghini, which answers to Audi inside the Volkswagen group.

The trajectory — 23,000 entrants in 2000, 94,000 attendees in 2024, 118,036 in 2026 — says the insight of 2000 was not tied to a moment in the market. Motorcycle tourism was not a niche to be exploited once; it was a segment still forming, and the region walked into it when walking in cost €152,000. The same positioning, on the same event, would today be bought at a different order of magnitude.

There is a limit that has to be named, though, because ignoring it would make the case prettier than it is. A 1:46.9 ratio cannot be reproduced on demand: it comes out of the meeting between a contained public investment, a brand with a community already bound together, and a territory physically equipped to absorb the visitors. Remove one of the three and the multiplier collapses. What is reproducible is not the number, it is the method — define the target before the platform, choose the event for its ability to intercept that target, negotiate a role in the design rather than a space in the material, and build every instrument around a conversion mechanism.

If there is a lesson worth carrying away from a case from the year 2000, it is that the measurability of a sponsorship is not a property of the event. It is a decision taken before anyone signs.

How that logic applies to top-level motorcycle racing today — what a Grand Prix is worth to the territory that hosts it, and how major events and destinations feed each other — is a thread we have followed elsewhere. On the measurement side, the same discipline applied to a different series produces a five-pillar framework for sponsorship ROI, while the distance between a logo and a return is the subject of sponsorship activation. For a brand looking to enter motorcycle racing now with a measurable project, the starting point is MotoGP sponsorship.

Frequently asked questions about the World Ducati Weekend case study

What was the return on the World Ducati Weekend 2000 sponsorship?

The Emilia-Romagna region invested 294.2 million lire (around €151,900) and generated a measured economic impact of 13.8 billion lire, roughly €7.13 million.
