Honda consolidates its premier-class MotoGP programme into a single factory team and brings in a new Spanish sponsor: Repsol. At the first attempt, the Repsol Honda Team wins the world title. From there, for thirty seasons, the orange and blue of the Repsol livery become shorthand for a winning Honda: fifteen riders’ titles, ten constructors’ titles, 183 wins and 455 podiums in the premier class, and names that remain etched in motorsport history — Mick Doohan, Alex Criville, Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Marc Márquez.

Then, on 31 December 2024, the contract expires. And for the first time in three decades, it isn’t renewed.

This isn’t just another routine contract lapse. It’s the end of one of the longest and most identity-defining sponsorships in recent motorsport history — the kind of deal that stops being perceived as a commercial contract and becomes part of the name of the thing it sponsors: “Repsol Honda”, not “Honda, sponsored by Repsol”. Which is exactly why the second half of the story, the 2026 half, deserves attention: because Repsol didn’t leave MotoGP. It left Honda.

The second life of a sponsorship

We call this a sponsorship’s second life: a brand closes out an all-encompassing title sponsorship, then returns to the same sport some time later with a deal of a completely different intensity — no longer a name stitched onto a single team’s leathers, but a presence spread across a different level of the sport’s pyramid.

That’s exactly what happened. Since 2025 the Honda factory team has raced as Honda HRC Castrol: Castrol, the Japanese manufacturer’s technical partner since 1959, took over from Repsol as title sponsor, and in 2026 the team — with Joan Mir and Luca Marini on board — keeps that identity. Repsol, for its part, didn’t disappear from the paddock. In 2026 it returned to MotoGP in a different role: official lubricant supplier for Moto2 and Moto3 through 2030, plus a deal that secures it the title sponsorship of one Grand Prix per season (the round hadn’t been announced at the time of publication) and trackside branding spread across the entire world championship calendar.

Two different sponsorships, not a downgrade

It’s tempting to read this move as a step down. It isn’t — or rather, it isn’t in the sense that word is usually meant. A team title sponsorship ties the brand’s value to the performance of two riders on a single bike, weekend after weekend: when the team wins, the sponsor wins with it; when the team goes through a difficult season, as Honda did in some of the final years of the Repsol partnership, the sponsor’s image takes an indirect hit too. A category-level sponsorship — official supplier to two classes, title sponsor of a single event, branding spread across the whole championship — shifts the risk: less exposure to a single team’s sporting results, more stability, more continuity guaranteed by a contract with the championship organiser rather than with one team.

It’s no coincidence, then, that some of MotoGP’s most identity-defining brands — Repsol among them, and other long-running motorsport title sponsors before it — have chosen, once a cycle ends, to stay in the sport by moving to a different sponsorship level rather than leaving altogether. The question a brand should ask itself at the end of a decades-long title sponsorship isn’t “stay or go”, but “which level of the sport’s pyramid should our brand be associated with now”.

What remains of the Repsol-Honda partnership

The numbers stand, and they’re worth restating — not out of nostalgia, but because they set the benchmark against which every long-term motorsport sponsorship is now measured: thirty years, fifteen riders’ titles in the premier class, ten constructors’ titles, 183 wins, 455 podiums. Very few sports sponsorships, in any discipline, reach that kind of continuity or that level of mutual identification between brand and sporting property.

That’s precisely why the end of the deal in 2024 didn’t mean Repsol dropped off the radar of teams following motorsport, or out of the MotoGP sponsorship landscape: it meant redesigning, from scratch, the level at which it wants to be present in the sport.

What a brand weighing a motorsport sponsorship today can learn from it

The most useful lesson for anyone weighing a motorsport entry — or renewal — today isn’t “sponsorships come to an end”. It’s that the end of a title sponsorship deal shouldn’t be planned as a binary event. A brand that builds thirty years of identification with a single team accumulates a stock of recognition that doesn’t evaporate when the contract expires: with the right partner, it can be reinvested into a different, more distributed sponsorship format, less tied to the sporting risk of any one season.

It’s a question worth asking before signing, not only thirty years later: which level of the pyramid — team, category, event, championship — actually matches the brand’s objectives, today and a decade from now.

Frequently asked questions about the Repsol-Honda MotoGP sponsorship

How long did Repsol sponsor Honda's MotoGP team?

Thirty years, from 1995 to 2024.
