It is a documented execution spanning eight years, readable by headline and by number. Drive to Survive launched on Netflix in 2019. Miami GP inaugurated in 2022. Las Vegas GP inaugurated in 2023. F1 fanbase in the United States reaching 52 million in 2024 (Formula 1 corporate data). F1 sponsor revenue from US sources more than tripled in three years. In October 2025, Apple acquired US F1 streaming rights for over 700 million dollars, in a deal that consolidates F1’s US commercial platform as one of the most valued assets in the Liberty portfolio.

MotoGP today is at the starting line of the same playbook. A single US race (Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas), a TV contract with FOX Sports, a docuseries presumably in production, and a public announcement from Liberty last May pointing to Miami as a credible destination for a second American race.

The positioning is not Formula 1 today — it is Formula 1 in 2017-2018, with the same proprietary playbook of those who are now deploying it. For the American CEO or CMO evaluating a motorsport entry in the next 24 months, understanding where the playbook sits along its trajectory is the most important decision variable.

What Liberty has already announced — and what it has not

In May 2026, Liberty management explicitly identified Miami as the logical destination for a second MotoGP race in the United States. The specialist press reported the hypothesis in detail. At the time of writing, the announcement is not yet formal and remains in the domain of public intention, not signature. One technical constraint has already emerged and should be noted: Liberty itself acknowledged that the Miami circuit, designed as a Formula 1 single-seater track, presents safety issues for motorcycles significantly greater than for cars, and that a MotoGP-compatible version will require modifications or an alternative layout.

One calendar detail must be separated from the US dossier to avoid confusion. The official launch of the 2027 season and the public opening of the new 850cc technical cycle will take place in Rio de Janeiro on 21 February, with an event on Botafogo beach against the backdrop of Sugarloaf Mountain. The first race of the calendar will be in Buriram, Thailand, on 5-7 March. These are two events that follow different geographical logics: Brazil for the narrative opening of the new technical cycle, Thailand for the large South-East Asian market that MotoGP has historically served better than Formula 1. Neither touches the US plan, but they are worth keeping separate because the press sometimes aggregates them into a single geographical expansion narrative that actually has independent components.

There is a broader second strategic signal: MotoGP, under Liberty, is moving structurally towards street circuits. The Australian Grand Prix from 2027 will leave Phillip Island for a modified version of the Adelaide street circuit. It is a paradigm shift: races are moving closer to the paying public, with the aim of replicating in MotoGP the same geographical logic Liberty has already executed in F1 between Miami, Las Vegas, and, as of this weekend, Madrid. Miami as a possible US MotoGP venue sits within this broader framework, not outside it.

The rest of the US MotoGP roadmap remains in the domain of intentions. The docuseries does not yet have an official launch date. The renewal or upgrade of the US TV contract with FOX Sports has not yet been publicly announced. US MotoGP commercial revenues in 2026 remain in the order of magnitude documented in the 2024 Dorna accounts, without the first Liberty-driven leap.

The F1 template mapped onto the MotoGP timeline

To understand where we are, it is useful to align the Liberty F1 timeline with the Liberty MotoGP timeline with precision, not by analogy.

Liberty closed the F1 acquisition in January 2017. In the first twenty-four months (2017-2018), public moves were: rebranding, digital restart, early conversations with Netflix, Miami siting under discussion. No visible transformation of commercial revenue. Year 3 (2019): Drive to Survive launched, and the US audience curve begins to bend. Year 4 (2020): the pandemic, which paradoxically accelerated docuseries adoption and the US F1 fanbase doubled in three years. Year 5 (2021): cost cap signed, Miami GP entry into the 2022 calendar. Years 6-7 (2022-2023): Miami GP, Las Vegas GP, US revenue growing from $80-100M to $400M. Years 8-9 (2024-2025): consolidation and sale of the US streaming right to Apple for $700M.

Liberty closed the Dorna acquisition in July 2025. We are at 9 September 2026, meaning we are inside the thirteenth month of the Liberty MotoGP phase. In F1-equivalent terms, we are halfway through year 2. The rebranding to MGPSEG (MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group) is done (February 2026). The commercial team is in position (with Borja de Altolaguirre as Head of Sponsorship, Vince Russell as CFO, and Kelly Brittain as Global Marketing). The Concorde Agreement — the agreement with the teams — is signed (Brno, June 2026). The commercial leap has not yet arrived; in the F1 calendar it came in 2019 with the docuseries, and then in 2022-2023 with the new races.

Those who mechanically transfer the F1 calendar to the MotoGP timeline say: we are at F1 2018. The MotoGP docuseries should bring the first leap within 12-18 months of launch. The new US races bring the second leap between 2027 and 2028. Post-rerating commercial consolidation arrives around 2029-2030.

It is a defensible reading, but it needs to be corrected for two structural variables: MotoGP starts from a smaller US base than F1 (the US MotoGP fanbase is in the order of several million against F1’s 40 million pre-Drive to Survive), and MotoGP arrives on the market when US streaming habits are already formed. F1 inaugurated them; MotoGP finds them ready. The first factor slows the absolute curve; the second accelerates the relative one. The combination of the two suggests that the US MotoGP commercial leap will likely open in a 2027-2029 window, not in a single season.

There is a third element worth making explicit. F1 had to build its US narrative from scratch. MotoGP does not: the championship has a storytelling asset that F1 did not have — an American rider currently on the grid (Joe Roberts in Moto2, with a hoped-for MotoGP progression), a winning American team (Trackhouse Racing has been an Aprilia Satellite team since 2024, with NASCAR roots and US ownership), and a community of enthusiasts who in the United States have a deep motorcycling tradition beyond the circuit.

Liberty’s narrative task in US MotoGP is not to generate a fanbase from scratch but to convert a latent fanbase and concentrate it on the Championship. This changes the logic of the docuseries and the new races: they do not catalyse a non-existent market — they reorganise an existing but dispersed one.

What to avoid

The most common mistake in conversations with American CMOs evaluating motorsport is waiting for the second US race to make a decision. It is the natural instinct: “when Miami is confirmed, we will see if the market holds.” But it is precisely the wrong logic relative to the rerating window. Those who enter when the second race is announced pay the pricing of a stabilised asset. Those who enter now pay the pricing of an asset still under construction. The acquisition value lies in the difference.

The other mistake, subtler, is assuming the F1 playbook will translate one-to-one into MotoGP. It will not. F1 used Drive to Survive to build a fanbase almost from zero; MotoGP instead starts with a consolidated global fanbase (eighth global sports property by cumulative audience) and a US one that is small but real. The curve will not be the same. The playbook applies by strategic architecture, not by absolute numbers — and this is precisely the kind of reading that the F1 calendar does not teach those who have not studied it carefully.

How we see it: three entry windows for American brands

For the American CEO or CMO planning motorsport allocation over the next 36 months, the horizon divides into three concrete windows.

Window 1: September 2026 → September 2027. This is the floor of the Liberty MotoGP window. Before the possible Miami launch, before the docuseries debut, before any structural commercial announcement on FOX Sports. Those who enter here take title slot factory or satellite positions at pre-catalyst pricing, with a 24-36 month activation horizon. This is the window of the sophisticated contrarian: you pay today’s minimum against a rerating expectation across the next two or three cycles.

Window 2: September 2027 → September 2029. This is the acceleration phase. Docuseries presumably launched, Miami GP possibly active, first measurable US MotoGP audience data post-catalyst. Pricing reprices observably. Those who enter here buy assets in motion, not stabilised assets — a reasonable compromise for the corporate brand that requires a documented reading before signing, but pays the premium of entering after confirmation.

Window 3: 2029-2031. This is the consolidation phase. If the playbook works as in F1, in this window US MotoGP pricing will be aligned with today’s mid-tier F1 benchmarks. Those who enter here buy a mature asset, with limited residual upside but low execution risk. This corresponds in F1 terms to the 2023-2025 period, after Miami and Las Vegas.

The three windows are not alternatives — they are three risk-return profiles. The US brand with the mandate to accept long horizons and execution risk enters in the first. The brand that requires immediate visibility on an already acclaimed asset enters in the third. The second is the compromise.

One operational detail worth adding for the CFO weighing the decision. In the first window, the ideal contractual structure for the US brand is multi-year with positive rerating clauses, not multi-year at a fixed price. The reason is straightforward but often missed: the acquisition value you buy today is precisely the rerating that will materialise over the next 24-36 months. A multi-year fixed-price contract transfers that value to the team selling the title sponsorship, not to the entering brand. The correct structure is multi-year with step-up thresholds anchored to a verifiable audience or revenue metric: it protects the team from the downside and leaves the brand with most of the upside. This is the pattern the most sophisticated brands used in F1 between 2018 and 2020.

The one question that matters

For the US brand evaluating MotoGP today, the question is not “when will Miami happen.” It is: our commercial thesis is that the Liberty MotoGP playbook replicates at least partially the F1 trajectory — and if so, in which of the three windows is our board prepared to sign?

Those who enter US MotoGP today enter an asset where the stage is set and the concert has not yet begun. Tickets cost what they cost today. In twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six months, they will not cost the same.

In America, you do not buy the present. You buy the calendar.

The Liberty Media playbook for the United States in Formula 1 is not a benchmark theory.
