One operational step is missing: what actually changes in MotoGP sponsorship by category, when the brand belongs to a specific product category?

Fit between brand and team is not a detail of the deal. In more than thirty years spent building motorsport deals on behalf of companies, we have learnt that it is the variable that comes before all the others. The factory-team title sponsorship package that suits a global energy drink is not what a fintech growing in Europe needs, and neither resembles the right package for an automotive aftermarket manufacturer. The needs change. The activations change. The KPIs used to measure success change. In this article we examine three categories that are particularly well suited to MotoGP in 2026, energy drinks, fintech and the automotive aftermarket, and for each one we break down the operational brief we would hand today to the CMO or CEO of a company in that sector.

The three categories at a glance

The short answer, before the analysis: energy drinks compete for spaces that are already taken, fintech finds a category that is still almost untouched, and the aftermarket only gets in if it brings a genuine technical component. The budget ranges that follow are RTR estimates, built on the negotiations we follow and on figures reported by the trade press: they are not public rate cards.

Category

Situation in MotoGP (September 2026)

Recommended entry level

Estimated annual budget

Main risk

Energy drinks

Mature category: Red Bull with KTM, Monster with Aprilia (title from 2027) and Ducati

Yamaha title in 2027 or title of a satellite team

€10-15m factory team; €3-8m satellite; under €3m feeder classes

Unavoidable comparison with the Monster-Aprilia precedent

Fintech

Under-represented: Bitget (regional partner in 2025), ACCM (Prima Pramac Yamaha)

Title of a second-tier factory team or of a high-profile satellite team

€5-10m factory team; €2-5m satellite

Volatility of the category and solidity of the individual partner

Automotive aftermarket

Deepest fit: Castrol with Honda, Brembo, Michelin (Pirelli from 2027), Motul

Factory team, if there is a technical component; otherwise satellite

Hard to read: 40-70% of the value is often settled in kind

A deal without technical presence is perceived as second-rate

Category 1: energy drinks and sports beverages in MotoGP

Energy drinks are the most mature and most present category in MotoGP. It is no coincidence that the two brands most deeply rooted in the paddock are two global energy drinks. Red Bull has been title sponsor of the KTM factory team for years and is one of the most instantly recognisable brands in motorsport. Monster Energy will become Aprilia’s title sponsor from 2027 (it has already been a main sponsor since the 2026 Italian Grand Prix) after eight seasons as title sponsor of Yamaha, a cycle that closes at the end of 2026: according to reports, Monster will stay alongside Yamaha in a scaled-back role. It has also held a main sponsor position in the Ducati Lenovo Team for years, confirmed for 2027 as well.

For the CMO of an energy drink evaluating MotoGP for 2026-2027, the competitive picture at title sponsor and main sponsor level is already crowded. That does not close the conversation, though: it reframes it. The useful options sit on three levels. The first is title sponsorship of a factory team: KTM is taken by Red Bull, Aprilia will be taken by Monster from 2027, Ducati has Lenovo, Honda carries the Castrol name (and on 25 September 2026 GPOne reported an agreement, not yet official, for Red Bull to return as a main partner of the Japanese team in 2027-2028); that leaves Yamaha, whose 2027 title is still to be assigned. The second is title sponsorship of a satellite team. The third is title sponsorship of related classes and events, where the investment is lower and visibility remains very high.

Some core activations remain solid for an energy drink in MotoGP, whatever the entry level: paddock hospitality as a relationship platform with distributors and retail chains; sampling and consumer activations in the fan areas (demographically, the MotoGP fan largely overlaps with the typical energy drink consumer); integration with the documentary projects the championship is investing in; and finally, the newest frontier opened by the Monster-Aprilia deal, visibility on the RS-GP livery, which becomes a global brand recognition tool.

The benchmark energy drink deal of 2026 is Monster-Aprilia. The value reported by the trade press (around €12 million a year, a figure not confirmed by the parties) sits at the top end of the range for a factory team. For an energy drink entering today below factory-team title level, the investment drops significantly: between €3 million and €8 million a year for the title of a satellite team, and less still for the feeder classes. By our estimates, the budget therefore reads on three levels: title sponsor of a factory team, €10-15 million a year, with a minimum activation horizon of twenty-four months; title sponsor of a satellite team, €3-8 million a year, usually with faster activation times; feeder classes and regional deals, under €3 million a year, with targeted visibility but limited reach. For a full picture of the cost items, see our guide to the cost of MotoGP sponsorship.

Operational recommendation: if the energy drink thinks in long horizons and has a factory-team title budget, the 2027 Yamaha window, with the title left free by Monster, is probably the most interesting of the cycle: a team in full rebuild, the most prestigious title available today, an ideal entry point for a brand that wants to build a leadership story. With a mid-range budget, the route is the satellite level: VR46 and Pramac are the most established outfits, Gresini and Trackhouse the fastest growing. A note on the category: whoever comes in after Monster-Aprilia must accept that the market will compare every new energy drink deal with that precedent. It pays to decide in advance how to position yourself against that benchmark, rather than having it imposed on you.

Category 2: fintech, digital banks and crypto in MotoGP

Today fintech is a category present in MotoGP, but under-represented. In 2025 Bitget was a MotoGP regional partner for four Grands Prix in Europe and South-East Asia (Italy, Germany, Barcelona and Indonesia). ACCM, a CFD broker, has been a multi-year partner of the Prima Pramac Yamaha team since 2026. No fintech yet holds the title sponsor position of a factory team, and no digital bank has yet built a platform comparable to those seen in Formula 1, where in recent years crypto and fintech have reached record levels of presence.

For the CMO of a fintech evaluating MotoGP for 2026-2027, the game is played the opposite way to energy drinks: there, brands compete for spaces already taken; here, the opportunities are still largely untouched. Coming in today as title sponsor of a second-tier factory team (Yamaha, whose 2027 title is still free) or of a high-profile satellite team (VR46, Pramac, Trackhouse) means being able to establish yourself as the first operator in the category, on a platform where Formula 1 precedents show how much value a fintech can generate when it enters at the right moment.

The activation package for a fintech in MotoGP includes elements that fit well with the typical positioning of these products. The first-party data component is particularly relevant: the MotoGP audience registered through VideoPass, TimingPass and the official app can be profiled on dimensions of great interest to a fintech, such as early adoption of new technologies, high spending power and international mobility. Hospitality is useful for activations aimed at corporate clients, especially for those offering wealth management and business banking.

Operational recommendation: for a fintech with a mandate to be first in its category, the 2026-2028 window is the best the championship will offer in the next cycle. Prices are still at the low end of the range, MotoGP’s commercial platform is scaling up and the risk of crowding in the category is low. By our estimates, the budget comes in two tiers: €5-10 million a year for the title sponsorship of a second-tier factory team, for the fintech that wants to dominate its segment; €2-5 million a year for the title sponsorship of a high-profile satellite team, for the growing fintech willing to accept more selective visibility in exchange for a lighter investment.

For a more traditional fintech (digital bank, insurtech) that needs an already established platform, the sensible choice is a main sponsor role in a factory team: it costs less than the title, leverages a platform already under construction and is easier to justify to the board. One caution about the category deserves to be spelt out: in motorsport, fintech has a history of strong volatility. The best-known case is FTX, which entered Formula 1 with Mercedes in September 2021 and disappeared from the cars in November 2022, after its collapse. A structurally sound fintech deal is multi-year and signed with a partner capitalised enough to ride out macroeconomic cycles, not a one-year operation with a brand that by 2028 may no longer be growing. The fit concerns the category, but choosing the individual partner requires deeper due diligence than in the other two categories.

Category 3: the automotive aftermarket in MotoGP

Historically, the automotive aftermarket is the category with the deepest fit with MotoGP: lubricants, tyres, braking systems, high-performance components. It is the category in which the link between brand and sport is not an image association, but one of real use. Castrol, since 2025 main sponsor and technical partner of Honda HRC with its name in the team’s title (Honda HRC Castrol, which took over from Repsol at the end of a thirty-year partnership that closed in 2024), and also present on Johann Zarco’s bike in the LCR team, is the most recent and visible example: Castrol does not only buy the team’s name, but also the role of technical lubricant supplier. In a previous article we showed that the three-level architecture of Lenovo-Ducati (technical infrastructure, co-branded product and team naming) can be replicated in other product categories. The aftermarket is the one where the model applies most naturally, because the technical component is an integral part of the team’s activity.

For the CMO of an aftermarket brand evaluating MotoGP for 2026-2027, the operational approach differs from that of the other two categories. The conversation does not start from marketing: it starts from engineering. A lubricant that becomes title sponsor without also being the team’s official lubricant is perceived as a second-rate sponsorship. A tyre manufacturer that becomes title sponsor without a structured technical relationship with the manufacturer steps outside the perimeter of marketing and strays into amateurism. In motorsport the aftermarket works when the deal is built on three levels, as in the Lenovo model: real technical presence, a co-branded or race-proven product, naming that amplifies the whole.

Aftermarket activations have components that are hard for the other categories to replicate: technically sophisticated content capable of engaging the most knowledgeable fans (the TimingPass segment); activations aimed at automotive aftermarket distribution networks (dealers, service networks, component distributors); and, for brands with a direct-to-consumer sales network, points of sale able to exploit the attention around MotoGP with local initiatives.

Operational recommendation: for an aftermarket brand that already has a technical presence in motorsport (even just as a supplier) and wants to make the leap to title sponsor, the serious negotiation happens with the factory teams, where technical fit is natural. Here too Yamaha, with its 2027 title still to be assigned, is an interesting option, for its commercial openness and for the potential technical relationship with the Japanese manufacturer. For an aftermarket brand with no technical track record that wants to come in purely through the commercial route, the path is a satellite team, with strong hospitality and content and no pretence of a technical component: lower prices, different but still legitimate ROI expectations.

In the aftermarket the budget is harder to read than in the other two categories, because a significant part of the deal is normally settled in kind (technical products, services, staff) rather than in cash. A lubricant that gives its name to a factory team, as Castrol does at Honda, covers part of its financial commitment by supplying the product used in racing. A fairing manufacturer that signs a technical partnership reduces the cash share in exchange for the actual supply. The result, in our experience, is that the declared price of these deals often represents only a fraction, between forty and seventy per cent, of the total economic value exchanged. For the CFO evaluating an aftermarket deal, this accounting asymmetry must be built into the ROI model from the very first step; otherwise the reading of the deal is systematically distorted. Beyond Castrol-Honda, there is no shortage of precedents: Brembo, a very long-standing technical partner for brakes; Michelin, the championship’s sole tyre supplier, which will be replaced from 2027 by Pirelli under a contract running to 2031; Motul, a partner of the championship for more than fifteen years, with a deal renewed until 2030. The category already has such a dense technical presence that every new entry is a conversation inside an existing ecosystem, not a start from scratch.

MotoGP’s new commercial counterpart

On 23 September 2026, just as this article was being finalised, a contextual update arrived. MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MGPSEG, the company known as Dorna Sports until 2025) announced four new senior appointments: Ryan Norys as Chief Commercial Officer (he joins from Tottenham Hotspur, where he was Chief Revenue Officer, and fills the position left vacant after Dan Rossomondo’s departure in early 2026); Louise Young as Chief Operating Officer (with more than eight years of experience in Formula 1 and, as her latest role, that of Chief Race Promotion Officer); Sameer Pabari as Chief Media Officer (from the NFL, Warner Bros. Discovery and Manchester United, with direct responsibility for the commercial growth of the direct-to-consumer streaming service, that is, VideoPass); Denitza Batchvarova as Chief Strategy Officer (from TKO Group, which controls the UFC). For the brand evaluating one of the three categories today, the operational message is concrete: in 2026-2027 MotoGP’s commercial counterpart is now a complete management team, with experience gained in Formula 1, the Premier League, the NFL and the UFC, and no longer a function in transition. Over the next twelve months, commercial negotiations will be led by people who have already applied similar strategies in other global championships.

The common principle: fit first, price second

The three categories differ in structural fit, pricing, activation package and success KPIs. They share, however, an operational principle that holds for any company considering MotoGP for 2026-2027: the right deal is not the most prestigious one available, but the one that integrates with the brand’s product category with the least possible friction. An energy drink as Aprilia’s title sponsor works because the MotoGP audience consumes that product. A fintech as main sponsor of a growing factory team works because it is the first to enter a still under-represented category. An aftermarket brand as title sponsor of a factory team, with a technical component, works because that technical component exists. Change just one of these three elements and the deal produces an ROI the board cannot justify.

Price is the second variable to decide, not the first. The first is always fit. In motorsport, as in the rest of strategic sponsorship, buying without fit means buying a stock, not a flow.

The summary question

For the CMO or CEO evaluating MotoGP today within a specific product category, the question is not “how much does it cost to get into MotoGP?”. The question is a different one: does our category have a structural fit with any of the deal configurations the championship will offer over the next twelve to twenty-four months? And, if so, which of these configurations best suits our positioning?

Those who answer this question well invest in something that pays off over the long term. Those who come in without having asked it buy a logo on a bike. And a logo on a bike, on its own, has never been what justifies an ROI in front of the board. This is where we start with the brands that ask us to evaluate a MotoGP sponsorship: from the category, not from the price list.

The right gear for the corner. Not the highest one available. Fit is not a detail of the deal. It is the deal.

Frequently asked questions about MotoGP sponsorship by category

How much does it cost to sponsor a MotoGP team in 2026?

According to RTR Sports estimates, title sponsorship of a MotoGP factory team costs between €10 million and €15 million a year, that of a satellite team between €3 million and €8 million, while feeder classes and regional deals stay below €3 million.
