The Red Bull Honda deal ends a three-season break that began at the end of 2023, when Marc Marquez left the Japanese manufacturer and the Austrian brand ended its sponsorship.

The news is about sport only up to a point. For anyone deciding where to put a sponsorship budget, it holds three lessons that are more useful than the press release itself: how a contractual role is written, what a category conflict costs, and why some deals follow a person rather than a team.

What the Red Bull Honda deal includes

According to the HRC press release, Red Bull will appear prominently on the next-generation bikes, in the garage and on the riders’ apparel. The full 2027 livery will be unveiled before the start of the championship, the one run with 850 cc bikes. HRC claims 45 wins and more than 90 podiums achieved together in the past and dates the brand’s arrival in the factory team to 2015. That is not the only date in circulation: in 2023 Motorsport.com wrote that Red Bull had sponsored the Honda works team since 2006, in the days of Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa, with its logos on the fairing visible only from 2015.

Within the window HRC points to fall Marc Marquez’s four consecutive riders’ titles, from 2016 to 2019, won with the Honda factory team. This is the past success the press release evokes and that the new deal aims to relaunch, in a MotoGP with new rules.

Why Red Bull left Honda: the Marquez clause

At the end of 2023, when Marquez moved to the Gresini team (we covered it at the time), Red Bull made use of a clause, according to Motorsport.com and Crash.net, that allowed it to terminate the contract if the Spanish rider left. The same contract, Motorsport.com reported, barred the team from carrying advertising for another energy drink for at least 2024.

We define a “Marquez clause” as a contractual provision that ties the life of a sponsorship to the presence of one specific person, rather than to the value of the team or to results on track. It does not measure performance, it measures who is in the saddle. For the brand it is a rational safeguard; for the team it is a risk the balance sheet does not show until the rider signs elsewhere.

It should be told apart from a performance clause, which triggers when the bike does not win: the Marquez clause can trigger even with the bike at the front, as long as he is no longer on it. In 2023 the two things added up, The Race recalls: Red Bull’s exit followed Marquez’s decision and Honda’s competitive decline. Today the script is reversed. Honda has signed Fabio Quartararo, a former world champion (2021), for 2027 and 2028, and according to The Race what seems to have weighed on Red Bull’s return was the 2027 regulation reset, with Pirelli tyres, and the arrival of the French rider himself.

Quartararo, Monster and the cost of the energy drink rivalry

The flip side of the deal concerns Quartararo. According to Motorsport.com, the rider, tied to Monster Energy since his MotoGP debut in 2019, will have to leave the rival brand and will become a Red Bull athlete from January. Again according to Motorsport.com, it would be Honda that covers the compensation provided for in his Monster contract, which ran beyond 2026. HRC’s press release names neither Quartararo nor Monster, and The Race treats the question of his personal sponsor as still open: these details should be read as press reconstruction, not as official data.

The precedent is Marquez himself, in reverse. In 2025, moving to the Ducati factory team, which has Monster as a sponsor, he gave up his personal contract with Red Bull: he explained it himself in December 2024, The Race reports, saying that with another sponsor in the team it was not possible to continue.

The energy drink map is redrawn as a result. Red Bull has been KTM’s title sponsor since the manufacturer’s premier-class debut in 2017 and has renewed for the 850 cc era. Monster will be Aprilia’s title sponsor from 2027 and, Motorsport.com writes, has its Ducati contract until the end of that same year. We analysed the mechanics in the Monster-Aprilia case and in the category briefs for energy drinks, fintech and aftermarket.

What it means for those who sponsor: three readings

The role is a contractual word. Honda writes “one of the major partners”, Dueruote reports “Official Partner”, and even on Castrol the outlets disagree: Speedweek classifies it as the main sponsor that gives the team its name and not as title sponsor, while The Race calls it title partner. Different labels for the same parties, each with different rights over livery, naming and categories: it is the maze we described in main sponsor, front sponsor and minor sponsor. For Red Bull the role does not include the name in the team, but the press release insists on visibility, and the comparison with the past is sharp: in the previous phase, Motorsport.com reports, the logo sat mostly on the lower part of the fairing and on the front mudguard.

The window is the regulations. 2027 changes a lot: engine capacity from 1000 to 850 cc, reduced aerodynamics, ride-height devices gone, Pirelli replacing Michelin on a contract running to 2031. In the press release HRC president Koji Watanabe asks for partners who share objectives and ambitions for the new version of the championship. When a championship restarts under new rules, whoever has an asset to relaunch and whoever is looking for visibility have the same interest in sitting at the table, as our analysis of the MotoGP factory teams shows.

Exclusivity has a cost, and the rights holder pays it. If Motorsport.com’s reconstruction is correct, to offer Red Bull a team free of rival energy drinks Honda took on the compensation owed by a rider. It is the textbook case of personal rights: a team’s product category is never truly exclusive as long as its riders hold personal contracts with competing brands, and the bill goes to whoever sells the livery. For a brand weighing a MotoGP sponsorship today, the useful question is not only “who else is on the bike” but “what personal deals do the riders have”. In the rider market the two negotiations often run together, as we explained in sponsorships and the silly season.

One question remains that the press release does not touch. If top-tier sponsorship increasingly follows people, and between 2023 and 2027 the Red Bull Honda case has given an almost textbook demonstration of it, what is a contract worth in which, next to the brand’s name, there is not the name of the person who guarantees its value?

Frequently asked questions about Red Bull and Honda in MotoGP

What role will Red Bull have in the Honda team from 2027?

Red Bull will be “one of the major partners” of the Honda HRC Castrol team from 2027, under a multi-year agreement announced on 1 October 2026.
