Nobody watching that afternoon thinks they are witnessing a farewell. Yet for more than thirty years it would remain the last Formula 1 race held in Africa: an entire continent dropped from the calendar and never brought back, while the World Championship learned its way to Bahrain, Singapore, Baku, Qatar and Miami.

Thirty-three years later, in an arena in Kigali, Rwandan President Paul Kagame chooses four words to open his remarks: “Today belongs to Africa”. On 13 October 2026 Formula 1 announced a ten-year agreement for the African Grand Prix, which will be held at a brand-new circuit in Bugesera, about forty kilometres south of the capital, right next to the new international airport. The debut is expected in the early 2030s, once the track is ready: 2030 is the earliest possible date, not yet a date on the calendar.

For anyone who follows Formula 1 as a fan, this is the return of a race. For anyone who looks at it as a sponsor, which is the point of view that interests us here, it is a marketing operation built with rare care. Starting with the name.

The African Grand Prix, not the Rwandan one

The race will not carry the name of the country that hosts it, nor that of its capital. The official name is the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda. Jean-Guy Afrika, chief executive of the Rwanda Development Board, told Motorsport.com that calling it the Kigali or Rwanda Grand Prix would have felt “slightly exclusive”, and that a continental name makes everything easier when it comes to approaching partners. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, for his part, praised Rwanda for not being “selfish” with the name.

It is not the first time Formula 1 has used a name bigger than a single country. The European Grand Prix and the Pacific Grand Prix, however, were mostly labels of convenience: they allowed a second race to be held in the same nation, from the Nürburgring to Japan’s Aida circuit, without touching the home Grand Prix. In Kigali the exact opposite is happening. The continental name is not a fallback, it is the strategy.

We call continental naming the choice to give a sporting event the name of a territory larger than the one hosting it, so as to offer fans and partners not a country but an entire market. Rwanda is only slightly larger than Sicily; Africa is home to more than one and a half billion people. A sponsor joining a Rwandan Grand Prix buys into a small country, however dynamic. One joining the African Grand Prix buys, at least on paper, a continent. Rwanda, meanwhile, gives up nothing: it keeps the role of presenting partner through Visit Rwanda, the tourism brand that anyone who follows European football has already seen on the shirts and in the stadiums of Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid. The name goes to the continent, the logo to the country.

Why not South Africa

For years the natural candidate was Kyalami. The South African circuit came close to a return several times, but a deal was never closed and the track still lacks FIA Grade 1 status, the licence required to host Formula 1. Rwanda, meanwhile, worked methodically. In 2024 it brought the FIA General Assembly to Kigali, the occasion Kagame chose to make the bid official; in 2025 it hosted the UCI Road World Championships, the first ever held in Africa. A climb built one event at a time, with the patience of someone who knows that major sporting rights are won first with credibility and only then with a contract.

South Africa’s sports minister Gayton McKenzie took it graciously: Rwanda, he wrote, worked on it longer and deserves it. He also added that South Africa will get its own race anyway, even before 2030, pointing out that Italy had two Grands Prix a season for years, while a continent of fifty-five countries is apparently expected to settle for one. We shall see. In the meantime, Kigali has taken first place in the queue.

The track, the numbers and Qatar

African Grand Prix: the key facts

Official name

Formula 1 African Grand Prix, presented by Visit Rwanda

Venue

Bugesera, about 40 km south of Kigali, next to the new international airport

Contract

10 years, announced on 13 October 2026

Debut

Early 2030s, with 2030 as the earliest possible date

Track

About 6 km, 17 corners, anticlockwise, 197 metres of elevation change per lap

Designers

Tilke Engineering & Architects and Alexander Wurz’s Wurz Design

Spectators

About 100,000 per day, close to 300,000 over the weekend (Rwanda Development Board estimates)

Last race in Africa

South African Grand Prix, Kyalami, 14 March 1993

The layout runs up and down two hills and alongside a lake. With 197 metres of elevation change per lap, almost twice the 102 metres of Spa-Francorchamps, which currently holds the record on the calendar, Carsten Tilke described it as a roller-coaster track. And it will not be a cathedral that opens once a year: the plans include karting, off-road courses and spaces for concerts and conferences, to keep the area alive well beyond race weekend.

Then there is Qatar. According to The Race, which was in Kigali for the launch, the wider Bugesera development, of which the circuit is a part alongside the airport, hotels and entertainment facilities, is worth around two billion dollars and is co-funded by Qatar. How much of the track is paid for with public money and how much with private capital has not been disclosed. The connection, though, goes beyond the circuit. In 2019 Qatar Airways agreed to acquire a 60% stake in the new Bugesera airport project, due to open in 2028 and described by the organisers themselves as one of the key conditions for racing. And Qatar Airways is the official airline and a Global Partner of Formula 1, as a glance at the list of Formula 1 partners shows. Those who build, those who fly and those who sponsor tend, in this story, to be the same.

A poor continent, and an immensely rich one

Which leaves the question every marketing director will ask: does it make sense to take one of the most expensive sports in the world to one of the poorest continents? The honest answer is that it depends on what you look at. If you look at income per head, Africa is a gamble. If you look at everything else, the perspective changes considerably.

The continent has more than one and a half billion inhabitants and a median age of around nineteen. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, it holds 30% of the planet’s mineral reserves, 12% of its oil reserves and 8% of its natural gas reserves. And Formula 1 already counts more than one hundred million fans in Africa, with almost 60% of fans in the key Sub-Saharan markets under the age of thirty-five. A young, growing audience that until now has watched the Grands Prix from another time zone.

Kagame put an argument on the table that goes beyond marketing. For decades, he said, African athletes have been a pillar of the global sports economy and have brought commercial value to the biggest leagues, while the continent received “almost nothing in return”. The Grand Prix, as he sees it, is a way to reverse the flow: to bring investment in instead of watching it leave. Jean-Guy Afrika talks about three hundred thousand people spending money in shops, restaurants and hotels over a single weekend, about new businesses and new jobs. That is the declared hope behind the whole operation, and the reason the contract runs for ten years rather than one: that the F1 circus, when it packs up and leaves, leaves something behind. It is no coincidence that in Rwanda sport and tourism have long travelled together, following a logic we have explored when writing about sports events and tourism.

What changes for sponsors

For a brand, the first thing to note is time. The first race is about four years away, and a ten-year deal covers an entire decade. It is a rare horizon in today’s Formula 1, one that leaves room for anyone who wants to build a presence in Africa step by step, with relationships, local activations and partners on the ground, instead of turning up at the last minute with a logo and little else.

The second is the kind of market. Formula 1’s African audience is young and growing, but the Africa that matters to many sponsors, at least at first, is the Africa of infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, finance and logistics: an Africa that buys business to business before it buys at the supermarket. A Grand Prix that presents itself as continental is the natural showcase for companies that speak to governments, investors and major clients across several countries at once, and for African brands that want to grow beyond their own borders. For European brands, and for international brands in general, it can become a gateway to relationships that would otherwise take years to build. Anyone who wants to understand what a sponsor really buys in this championship will find the full picture on our page about Formula 1 sponsorship.

The third is reputation. Amnesty International has described Visit Rwanda as a sportswashing operation, designed to divert attention from the human rights situation in the country; the government in Kigali rejects the accusations. Tensions linked to the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have already weighed on the country’s sponsorships. Bayern Munich, after fan protests, turned the partnership into a project for its youth academy in Kigali; Arsenal ended theirs at the close of the 2025/26 season, after eight years, by mutual agreement and after months of protests in the stands. For a sponsor, this is not a reason to stay out. It is a reason to come in with a properly conducted risk analysis and a credible story, one that speaks about what stays on the ground rather than what appears on television. We have gathered a few examples of brands already doing this in our article on sports sponsorship in Africa.

The last continent

With Rwanda on the calendar, Formula 1 will race, in Stefano Domenicali’s words, on every inhabited continent. It closes a circle that opened at Kyalami in 1993, and at the same time marks the definitive expansion of a sport that in recent years has learned to sell itself everywhere, from the United States to the Gulf. Lewis Hamilton has been saying it for a long time: a championship cannot call itself a world championship if it ignores Africa. Hamilton is forty-one and is unlikely to be on the grid when the lights go out in Bugesera. But his battle has now become Liberty Media’s as well.

It remains to be seen whether the African Grand Prix will truly be the first of a series, as Kigali hopes, or an exception destined to stay that way. One thing, however, can already be said. When a race chooses the name of a continent, whoever sponsors it is not just buying a weekend. They are buying a front-row seat on the future of one and a half billion people. How much that seat is worth is something every brand will have to decide for itself.

Frequently asked questions about the African Grand Prix

When will the African Grand Prix in Rwanda take place?

In the early 2030s, once the new circuit in Bugesera has been completed. 2030 is the earliest possible date, but Formula 1 has not yet set the date of the first race.
