Italy had been waiting since 1953

Monza, 30 August 2024. The first practice session is about ten minutes old when a young man from Bologna, who turned eighteen five days earlier, loses the rear of his Mercedes at the Parabolica. The car spins and slams into the barriers with a 52 g impact. It is his first official session on a Formula 1 weekend, in front of his home crowd, and it lasts roughly as long as an espresso at the bar.

Two years later, on 6 September 2026, on the same tarmac, Andrea Kimi Antonelli starts nineteenth after a power unit penalty and wins the Italian Grand Prix. No Italian had won at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. After the race, Toto Wolff talks about a circle closing.

The circle, truth be told, closes now. 1 November 2026, Mexico City Grand Prix: Andrea Kimi Antonelli is the Formula 1 world champion. He gets there with four races to spare, aged 20 years and 68 days.

For once, the numbers tell the story well. He is the youngest world champion in history: the record belonged to Sebastian Vettel, who won in Abu Dhabi in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days, and Antonelli lowers it by more than three years. He is the thirty-sixth driver to win the World Championship and the first Italian since Alberto Ascari, who sealed his second title at Bremgarten, in Switzerland, on 23 August 1953. Seventy-three years. It is also Mercedes’ first drivers’ title since Lewis Hamilton’s in 2020: the very man whose seat Antonelli took, and who now drives a Ferrari.

At the moment of the verdict his season stands at 9 wins, 7 pole positions and 16 podiums, for a total of 380 points: 119 more than Max Verstappen, who can no longer catch him.

From window to door

Back in August, on these pages, we tried to put a name to what was happening around Antonelli: the Italian window. The moment, cyclical but never guaranteed, when a competitive Italian driver changes the quality of the attention the country pays to Formula 1. Not the devotion to Ferrari, which is structural and does not depend on the standings, but an extra layer of salience that switches on when the sports papers write about an Italian winning in someone else’s car.

The season gave that intuition numbers that are hard to ignore. Over the nine Grands Prix up to and including the British round, Formula 1 TV audiences in Italy were up 27% on 2025, driven by an Italian leading the championship and a Ferrari back in competitive shape. On the day of Monza, across Sky and TV8, the race drew an average audience of 4.464 million, a 39% share and more than seven million unique viewers; on Sky alone it was the best Formula 1 audience since 2022.

A window, by definition, sooner or later closes. A title does not.

A title does not expire

There is a substantial difference between a winning season and a world title. A Grand Prix result is forgotten by the following Sunday; the roll of honour is not. Every time, ten or twenty years from now, someone tells the story of the first Italian world championship since Ascari, these will be the images: this year’s car, this year’s race suit, this year’s logos. Documentaries, anniversaries, retrospectives: Antonelli’s 2026 will be back on screen for decades, and so will everything around him.

It is not a new mechanism. It is the same helix effect we have written about more than once, the value that keeps pushing a sponsorship beyond the length of its contract, here in its most visible form. With one important detail: that value is usually built, through activation, storytelling and patience. This time it is inherited, but only by those who were already there when it happened.

Those who were there and those arriving now

This is the distinction that matters for anyone managing a sponsorship budget. The brands that were on Antonelli’s Mercedes in 2026 bought exposure and now find themselves holding a piece of Italian sporting history. Whoever arrives now is buying something else: the reigning champion, the title defence, a 2027 season in which every race weekend will have an Italian story to tell. It is a different product, not necessarily a worse one, but with a price list that is unlikely to stay where it was a year ago.

Then there is geography. The map of Italian brands in Formula 1 is still drawn almost entirely around Maranello, while the first Italian champion in seventy-three years won in a German car built in Brackley. For an Italian company that has never found the right angle in Formula 1, because the space around Ferrari is crowded and expensive, 2027 offers something rare: a national story outside Maranello, with a twenty-year-old protagonist and an audience that has learned to follow him in the meantime. There is more than one way in, from the team to the driver, from hospitality to licensing, and each should be chosen with the realism of someone who knows that sponsoring in Formula 1 takes time.

The Italian window is now a door.We help you work out which one to open, and when.

Formula 1 sponsorship

Seventy-three years

Ascari won his second title when Italian television was not yet broadcasting on a regular basis: RAI would only begin on 3 January 1954. Antonelli wins his in front of millions of screens, phones and feeds. In between lie seventy-three years, an entire industry born and grown around racing, and a country that never stopped talking about Formula 1, even when there were no Italians at the top of the map of world champions.

What remains to be seen is what we, who make our living in sports marketing, will do with this young man who two years ago ended up in the Parabolica barriers after ten minutes. The question is open, and will stay open for a while. The sporting answer, on the other hand, has arrived.
