For twenty minutes, on a track that belongs to Formula 1 that weekend, four MotoGP bikes will lap at more than 130 decibels each, half an hour before the cars head out for third free practice. On the same weekend the MotoGP paddock will be on the other side of the planet, at Phillip Island, for the Australian Grand Prix. In Austin, in other words, MotoGP turns up as a guest.

A guest, though, that carries weight. For the first time MotoGP becomes part of a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, the United States Grand Prix, in front of a crowd the organisers put at more than 400,000 people across the event. MotoGP announced it on 20 October 2026: Dani Pedrosa, Nicolò Bulega, Andrea Dovizioso and Lorenzo Savadori on track, and the four bikes on display in the Fan Zone throughout the weekend, with teams and riders on site from Thursday to Sunday.

For anyone who follows racing as a fan, it is a nice showcase. For anyone who looks at it as a sponsor, and that is the view we are interested in here, it is the first public test of a question that has been doing the rounds since Liberty Media bought MotoGP: what happens when the same owner holds the world championship on four wheels and the one on two.

Twenty minutes in Austin: what happens on 24 October

MotoGP will stage an on-track demonstration during the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, on Saturday 24 October 2026 from 11:40 to 12:00 local time, with fast laps ahead of FP3. It is the first time MotoGP has taken part in a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend.

MotoGP at the F1 United States Grand Prix: the facts

Event

Formula 1 MSC Cruises United States Grand Prix 2026, Circuit of The Americas, Austin

Demonstration

Saturday 24 October 2026, 11:40-12:00 local time, ahead of FP3

Riders

Dani Pedrosa (KTM), Nicolò Bulega (Ducati), Andrea Dovizioso (Yamaha), Lorenzo Savadori (Trackhouse)

Fan Zone

The four bikes on display throughout the weekend; teams and riders on site from Thursday to Sunday

Expected crowd

More than 400,000 people across the event (organisers’ estimate)

MotoGP’s return to Austin

MotoGP Grand Prix of the United States, 23-25 April 2027

The choice of riders already tells a story. Pedrosa, with three world titles across 125cc and 250cc and a place in the MotoGP Hall of Fame, is the championship’s memory. Dovizioso and Savadori are test riders. Bulega is the present: 2026 WorldSBK champion, he will race in MotoGP in 2027 with the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, and he has said so himself: he will be back in Austin with MotoGP in 2027. As for the bikes, they top 360 km/h and lean beyond 60 degrees. A Formula 1 crowd knows those numbers by hearsay. On Saturday it will see them.

Two championships, one owner

MotoGP and Formula 1 have had the same owner since 3 July 2025, when Liberty Media completed its acquisition of 84% of Dorna, in a deal that valued the championship at 4.2 billion euros. Since February 2026 Dorna has been called MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group, and today it is, alongside Formula 1, one of Liberty Media’s two main subsidiaries. The two championships, however, remain separate: two companies, two headquarters, two management teams.

This is not an organisational detail, it is a stated choice. In April 2024, announcing the deal, Liberty Media’s then chief executive Greg Maffei was explicit: the only thing Liberty would not do was run MotoGP and Formula 1 together, both for regulatory reasons and because of the structure of its agreements with Formula 1’s partners and teams. He added that the two series would not be treated as a bundle to be taken to market together. According to Motorsport.com, which revealed the Austin plan in July, joint events have also been discussed at executive level, but a combined Grand Prix for the two series is not on the cards in the near future.

Austin, then, is not a merger. It is a dinner invitation, not a wedding. And that is exactly why it deserves a close look: it shows what Liberty can do with two championships it has no intention of merging.

Why put MotoGP in front of the Formula 1 crowd

MotoGP’s own announcement gives the reason: the Austin weekend is a unique opportunity to bring the championship into one of the biggest sporting events in the United States, one of the best-attended motorsport weekends in the world. The 2025 edition of the Formula 1 Grand Prix was a sell-out, with attendance estimated at more than 400,000, and for 2026 Bobby Epstein, the circuit’s founder and the race promoter, has said ticket sales are on pace for a new record.

MotoGP has raced at Circuit of The Americas since 2013, and in the United States it still has room to grow, as its own local promoter acknowledges. Speaking to Motor Sport Magazine, Epstein observed that there are great stories about the riders that are not being told, and that this is where untapped potential lies. Twenty minutes on track are not enough to tell those stories, but they put MotoGP in front of the right people: motorsport fans who have already paid and are already on site, lent to MotoGP by Formula 1 for an afternoon. We have written about Liberty’s American plan, including the Miami hypothesis, in our playbook on MotoGP’s expansion in the United States.

There is also a detail that makes the experiment repeatable. Until now, Motorsport.com explained, most teams used road bikes dressed in MotoGP colours for promotional appearances. The new five-year agreements between the promoter and the teams, signed in 2026 for the 2027-2031 period, instead include, again according to Motorsport.com, a commitment to keep fully working prototypes available precisely for occasions like this one. Austin, in other words, could be the first of a series. And it is certainly the trailer for a specific date: MotoGP returns to Circuit of The Americas from 23 to 25 April 2027, as shown in the 2027 MotoGP calendar.

The bridges between the two paddocks already exist

Even without merging the championships, people, suppliers and agencies are already moving from Formula 1 to MotoGP. Guenther Steiner, Haas team principal for many years, led the consortium that took over the Tech3 team in 2025 and became its chief executive; among the investors is Pierre Gasly, whom Tech3 presents as the first active Formula 1 driver to invest in a MotoGP team. In May 2026 Ross Brawn, the man behind Benetton, Ferrari, Brawn GP and Mercedes, joined Pramac’s board of directors as a strategic adviser.

The same goes for suppliers. From 2027 Pirelli, the sole tyre supplier to Formula 1, will also be MotoGP’s sole supplier, under a five-year contract running to 2031. On the commercial side, the most visible move came on 23 June 2026, when MotoGP named CAA Sports its exclusive global sponsorship agency: the same agency Liberty had chosen in 2017 for Formula 1’s sponsorship rights. We explained what this means for anyone negotiating with the championship in our piece on MotoGP and CAA Sports.

It is hard not to see a link between these moves and the Austin demonstration. The two paddocks remain two worlds, but managers, suppliers and agencies are starting to be shared.

What changes for sponsors

For a sponsor, three things change: who is selling, who you are talking to and when it makes sense to come in.

Who is selling. Today there is no package that buys Formula 1 and MotoGP together, and Maffei’s words make it unlikely that one will arrive in the form of a single championship. But common ownership, and a MotoGP that sells its rights through the same agency Formula 1 once chose, shorten the distance between the two negotiations. A brand that already knows the model of Formula 1 sponsorship will find counterparts in MotoGP who built it, or who are replicating it. We covered this when analysing Liberty Media’s MotoGP roadmap, where Chase Carey, the architect of Liberty’s Formula 1, now sits as president of MotoGP Sports Entertainment.

Who you are talking to. In Austin, MotoGP appears at an event that, according to the organisers, draws more than 400,000 people who came for Formula 1. For a brand already present in MotoGP, an occasion like this can mean extra visibility, in front of an audience the championship would not have reached on its own. For those considering whether to sponsor MotoGP with American ambitions, Austin is a clue to how Liberty intends to grow that market: by borrowing the audience of its big sister.

When to come in. In the first half of 2026, according to Liberty Media’s accounts, MotoGP’s sponsorship revenue grew thanks to new sponsors and to the uplifts built into existing contracts. That is the direction the owner has chosen, and it is reasonable to expect every successful experiment, starting with Saturday’s, to make the curve steeper. That is why, in our view, those who come in early buy at construction prices. Those who wait, at market prices.

A twenty-minute trailer

Bulega put it with a rider’s simplicity: we hope those laps show how spectacular our sport is; we want to give fans a taste of what awaits them when I return to Austin with MotoGP in 2027. That is the exact definition of a trailer.

It remains to be seen whether, on Saturday, the Formula 1 crowd will watch the MotoGP bikes as a curiosity between one session and the next or as the start of something. Liberty has already decided not to merge the two championships. But not merging them does not mean keeping them apart. And in sports marketing, sometimes, the only difference between a guest and a relative is time.

Frequently asked questions about MotoGP and Formula 1 in Austin

When does MotoGP run at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix?

On Saturday 24 October 2026, from 11:40 to 12:00 local time, at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, ahead of Formula 1’s third free practice session.
