That is the haul with which Jorge Martin leads the MotoGP world championship after the Indonesian Grand Prix on 11 October, two points ahead of Marc Márquez, with five races still on the calendar. In 2027 Martin, the 2024 world champion, will race for Yamaha. And the factory Yamaha team waiting for him has, as of today, no title sponsor announced for 2027: it is the only factory team on the grid in this position (Honda carries Castrol in its name, although Castrol itself describes its role as main sponsor).

The usual assumption is that a title sponsor slot stays open when the team is not worth the price it asks. Looking at Yamaha’s 2026, you would be tempted to believe it. No podium in seventeen race weekends, neither on Sunday nor in the Sprint. No win since the German Grand Prix on 19 June 2022. Last of the five manufacturers, with 97 points against Aprilia’s 503. Yamaha’s best-placed rider, Fabio Quartararo, is fourteenth with 74 points, and from 2027 he will race for Honda.

I read it differently. The slot is open because today’s price is set by looking at 2026, while what you are buying is measured from 2027 onwards: one rider who is fighting for the title and another, Ai Ogura, who won at Assen this year, both under contract for 2027 and 2028; a rulebook that puts every manufacturer back on the same starting line; a manufacturer that sells almost four of every five motorcycles in Asia. The gap between that price and that value is the opportunity. It is also the risk.

A word on the facts. Several outlets report that Monster Energy, title sponsor since 2019, will no longer hold that role in 2027, but there is no statement from Yamaha or Monster. On what Monster’s role will be afterwards, the accounts differ. In June Paolo Pavesio, managing director of Yamaha Motor Racing, told Speedweek that Yamaha and Monster will be together in 2027 too, “100 per cent”, in a form still to be decided together. In July Speedweek spoke of a move from title to main sponsor, on 29 September of a complete exit; on 1 October GPOne wrote of a reduced presence, still under negotiation. As we will see, this detail matters more than the price.

This article is for the CMO weighing the slot and for the CFO who will sign off the budget: how to read a title deal on a team that is rebuilding, what Yamaha’s history tells us, the numbers to keep on the table, the most common traps and our method.

A title on a rebuilding team is bought like an option

Anyone who works in finance knows the call option: you pay a premium today for the right to share in a stock’s rise, without having to buy it at full price. Yamaha’s title sponsor slot for 2027 works in a similar way, and reading it like this helps the CMO and the CFO speak the same language.

Premium, underlying, expiry

The premium is the fee for the rights. The underlying is the team’s competitiveness in the 850cc era, which drives visibility, the story you can tell and the value of the hospitality. The expiry is the length of the contract, which is best aligned with the riders’ contracts: so 2027 and 2028 at the very least.

Then there is the variable that, in finance, pushes up the value of an option and that here, for once, works in the buyer’s favour: uncertainty. 2027 wipes out many of the certainties built up over recent years. Engine capacity drops from 1,000 to 850cc, ride-height devices are banned, fairings get narrower, fuel becomes fully sustainable and Pirelli replaces Michelin as the single tyre supplier (we covered this in our guide to the 2027 MotoGP regulations). Yamaha comes into this reset having already changed engine architecture, switching to a V4 at the start of 2026. Nobody knows today how the 850cc M1 will perform. And that is precisely why the slot costs less than it would if the answer were already known, and positive.

Where the analogy breaks down

The comparison, however, only goes so far. In a financial option the maximum loss is the premium paid. In a sponsorship it is not. There are the activation costs, which in my experience often end up matching the value of the rights. And there is the cost, less visible but real, of attaching your name for two seasons to a bike that struggles to break into the top ten.

There is also a detail that gets little attention. Since 2024 Yamaha has been in rank D of the concessions system, the one reserved for the manufacturers in the greatest difficulty, which are entitled to more testing and more freedom of development. In 2027 every manufacturer starts again from rank B. The regulatory reset also takes away the margin the rules used to give Yamaha. The underlying can rise; nobody guarantees that it will.

Yamaha’s MotoGP sponsors: three title sponsors and three seasons without

The last twenty years of the factory Yamaha team say one thing above all: an open title slot is not a verdict on the team.

1. Fiat, 2007-2010. Four seasons with a carmaker’s name on a Japanese manufacturer’s bike, and three riders’ titles: Valentino Rossi in 2008 and 2009, Jorge Lorenzo in 2010. What it tells us: a brand from outside the most obvious product category can carry the name of a factory team for years, if the sporting project supports it.

2. Yamaha Factory Racing, 2011-2013. After Fiat left, three seasons without a title sponsor, with a few official sponsors but no brand in the team’s name. In 2012 Lorenzo won the world championship, sealing it at Phillip Island on 28 October. What it tells us: sporting value and commercial value do not move together. Anyone who had bought the name in 2011 would have found themselves, a year later, with the world champion.

3. Movistar, 2014-2018. A five-year contract and Lorenzo’s title in 2015. What it tells us: a long horizon lets you ride out the less brilliant seasons too, without renegotiating at every twist in the standings.

4. Monster Energy, 2019-2026. Monster, already title sponsor of the Tech3 Yamaha satellite team since 2009, joined the factory team as a sponsor in 2013 and only became title sponsor in 2019, when the team took the name Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP: six years in the waiting room. With Quartararo it won the 2021 world championship; after the last victory, in June 2022, it stayed on the team for more than four years without a win. From 2027 it will be Aprilia’s title sponsor, as announced on 29 May. What it tells us: the path from official sponsor to title sponsor can also be walked in reverse, and a brand can step down a level on a team without leaving it: according to GPOne, that is the scenario Monster and Yamaha are negotiating.

Over the last twenty years the factory Yamaha team has already raced three seasons without a title sponsor, and in one of them it won the world championship.

The numbers to keep on the table

Zero podiums for Yamaha in the seventeen race weekends of 2026, Sprints included. The last win is still the one at the Sachsenring, on 19 June 2022.

97 points in the constructors’ standings after Mandalika: fifth out of five.

355 points for Martin, leading the championship with Aprilia. Ogura won the Dutch Grand Prix on 28 June with Trackhouse. Yamaha announced both on 1 July, with contracts for 2027 and 2028.

3.9 million motorcycles sold in Asia, excluding Japan, by Yamaha Motor in 2025, out of a total of around 5 million, according to the figures the company published for investors. 94% of the group’s revenue comes from outside Japan. For a brand growing in South-East Asia, this is the figure that carries the most weight.

7 March 2027: according to the official calendar the season opens in Thailand, at Buriram, and in October runs through Motegi, Sepang and Mandalika in three weeks. Before that come the Valencia test on 1 December, the official Sepang tests from 31 January and the season launch in Rio de Janeiro on 21 February.

The price. Neither party has ever made the value of the Yamaha title deal public. In the September piece on categories I placed the title of a factory team between €10 and €15 million a year, and that of a second-tier factory team between €5 and €10 million. These are RTR estimates, not public data. In my view Yamaha starts 2027 in the second tier. That placing, though, may not hold for long: if Martin were to win the championship by Valencia, on 29 November, Yamaha would go into 2027 with the reigning champion. It is a scenario, not a forecast, but it is the price factor closest in time.

Where deals most often trip up

There are five, and I have seen them come back every time a slot of this level opens up.

Pricing 2027 on the 2026 standings. It cuts both ways. The brand that looks only at this year’s results thinks it can buy at a bargain price; the team that looks only at Martin’s name thinks it can ask a champion’s price. Either way, the wrong column is being read. The price should be tied to what will happen, through the clauses, not to what has already happened.

Asking the price before the scope. The first question is who stays on the bike. If Monster remains, even with a smaller logo, category exclusivity normally shuts the door on any other energy drink. With this I am updating what I wrote in September, when I pointed to the Yamaha window as probably the most interesting of the cycle for a brand in that category: it only holds if Monster leaves completely, and today neither scenario is official.

Buying the rider instead of the team. Martin and Ogura are under contract until 2028. A title deal that runs beyond that date has to be written with whoever comes next in mind. I piloti vanno, le squadre restano: riders come and go, teams stay. The contract needs obligations on rider availability for activation and a clause covering a change of line-up.

Signing a multi-year deal at a fixed price. On a rebuilding team a fixed price hands the team the value of the recovery, if it comes, and leaves the brand with all the risk, if it does not. A lower base with steps tied to verifiable results works better: podiums, position in the constructors’ standings, number of races finished in the top five.

Coming late to activation. A title deal signed at the end of January reaches the Sepang tests with a livery designed in a hurry and no plan for the first race. From the Valencia test on 1 December to the start at Buriram is little more than three months, and the first year of a two-year contract is largely played out there.

How we assess it

On a slot like this, our method has three stages.

Before signing: scope and geographic fit. We map who stays on the bike and with which protected categories, how much livery space is genuinely available, which hospitality and rider-usage rights are included. Then we compare the brand’s growth markets with Yamaha’s. If Asia is not among the client’s priorities, the slot is worth much less to them than it is to others. And we tell them so.

In the contract: the price treated as an option. A modest base, steps tied to results, a review of the fee after the first season if the team stays in the lower half of the constructors’ standings. A term aligned with the riders, with a renewal option that can stretch to 2031, the horizon of the agreements signed in June between MotoGP and the five manufacturers. This is the contractual form that turns the analogy into real protection.

The first ninety days: arriving ready at Buriram. Livery and launch, a hospitality plan built around the Asian races, content on the two riders ready in time for the tests.

One last note: the factory team is not the only way into Yamaha. The Prima Pramac Yamaha satellite team has Prima Assicurazioni as title sponsor until 2027, and with a smaller budget the two levels should be compared before choosing. The picture of sponsors by team is in our 2027 MotoGP sponsors and partners list; that of the five factory teams in our pillar on the factory teams.

The move for this week

If your brand has Asia among its growth markets and a budget for a factory title deal, there is one thing to do this week: ask Yamaha for the scope before the price. Who stays on the bike, which category is protected, how much livery is available, which rider rights are included and for how many seasons. With those answers in hand, the price negotiation stops being a bet on the standings and becomes a calculation.

And if the conversation with Yamaha needs setting up, or needs comparing with the alternatives at the same budget, that is the work we do every day. We are independent and paid on results: our only interest is that the right slot goes to the right brand.

The 2026 standings set the price. The clauses set the value.

Frequently asked questions about the Yamaha MotoGP sponsor in 2027

Who is Yamaha's MotoGP title sponsor in 2027?

As of 23 October 2026 no title sponsor has been announced for the factory Yamaha team in 2027.
