Il a appris \u00e0 rouler \u00e0 quatre ans et a couru d&#8217;abord en trial et en motocross. Apr\u00e8s des blessures au Supercross de Houston en 1983, il a quitt\u00e9 le motocross pour la vitesse : il a gagn\u00e9 sa premi\u00e8re course sur route avec une moto de flat track pr\u00eat\u00e9e par son oncle, Darryl Hurst.<\/p>\n<p>En 1985, il a gagn\u00e9 les deux manches de la manche de Superbike \u00e0 Willow Springs. En 1986, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 deuxi\u00e8me aux 200 Miles de Daytona, battu par Eddie Lawson. En 1987, son duel avec <strong>Wayne Rainey<\/strong> dans le championnat am\u00e9ricain de Superbike a tourn\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;avantage de Rainey, mais Schwantz a termin\u00e9 la saison en gagnant cinq des six derni\u00e8res courses.<\/p>\n<h2>La cat\u00e9gorie 500 avec Suzuki (1986-1992)<\/h2>\n<p>Schwantz a d\u00e9but\u00e9 dans le championnat du monde en 1986 \u00e0 Assen, avec une wild card. \u00c0 partir de 1988, il a couru \u00e0 plein temps avec Suzuki et a gagn\u00e9 tout de suite : le grand prix d&#8217;ouverture, \u00e0 Suzuka, au Japon. Cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, il a gagn\u00e9 deux courses et fini huiti\u00e8me. En 1989, il en a gagn\u00e9 six, dont le Grand Prix de Grande-Bretagne \u00e0 Donington Park, avec la Suzuki Pepsi, et a termin\u00e9 quatri\u00e8me. Deux ans plus tard, la m\u00eame rivalit\u00e9 a connu son moment le plus dur. Le 5 septembre 1993, au Grand Prix d&#8217;Italie \u00e0 Misano, Rainey est tomb\u00e9 alors qu&#8217;il menait et est rest\u00e9 paralys\u00e9 de la poitrine aux pieds, avec une l\u00e9sion de la moelle \u00e9pini\u00e8re. Sa carri\u00e8re s&#8217;est arr\u00eat\u00e9e ce jour-l\u00e0.<\/p>\n<h2>Le titre de 1993<\/h2>\n<p>1993 avait bien commenc\u00e9 pour Schwantz : quatre victoires dans la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 de la saison, sur un calendrier de 14 grands prix. En fin de saison, Rainey avait repris la t\u00eate du championnat, tandis que Schwantz \u00e9tait ralenti par une blessure au poignet. Apr\u00e8s l&#8217;accident de Rainey, Schwantz a gagn\u00e9 le titre \u00e0 29 ans, avec 248 points.<\/p>\n<h2>Le num\u00e9ro 34<\/h2>\n<p>Le 34 \u00e9tait le num\u00e9ro de son oncle Darryl Hurst, dont Schwantz conduisait les motos de flat track dans sa jeunesse. Il existe aussi une seconde version, qui le relie aux plaques rest\u00e9es en stock chez Yoshimura. Quelle que soit la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, lorsque Schwantz a quitt\u00e9 la comp\u00e9tition, la FIM a retir\u00e9 le num\u00e9ro : ce fut le premier num\u00e9ro retir\u00e9 par la f\u00e9d\u00e9ration.<\/p>\n<h2>La retraite en 1995<\/h2>\n<p>En 1994, Schwantz a \u00e9t\u00e9 quatri\u00e8me, avec deux victoires, entre blessures et probl\u00e8mes de poignet. En 1995, il a couru trois fois puis a pris sa retraite, en d\u00e9but de saison, apr\u00e8s une conversation avec Rainey : il a compris qu&#8217;il ne prenait plus autant de plaisir qu&#8217;avant. Avec les ann\u00e9es, la rivalit\u00e9 avec Rainey s&#8217;est transform\u00e9e en amiti\u00e9.<\/p>\n<h2>Apr\u00e8s les courses<\/h2>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s sa retraite, Schwantz a fond\u00e9 une \u00e9cole de pilotage \u00e0 son nom, la Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School, et a travaill\u00e9 sur le projet du Circuit of the Americas \u00e0 Austin, au Texas, en collaboration avec le concepteur Hermann Tilke et avec Tavo Hellmund. Le circuit accueille le Grand Prix des Am\u00e9riques depuis 2013, et Schwantz a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 comme ambassadeur moto de COTA en 2014.
