Winning MotoGP – a bigger picture

Manufacturers participate in racing for a variety of reasons, including brand exposure, technological advancements, and market research.

Brand awareness and other marketing reasons are a main factor here: with 20+ races around the globe and nine months of fierce competition, the MotoGP World Championship is a phenomenal global marketing platform bot for B2C and B2B activities.

Nonetheless, MotoGP and the smaller classes provides an opportunity for manufacturers to showcase their engineering expertise and innovation in a highly competitive environment. Engaging in motorsports can drive advances in materials science, aerodynamics, and propulsion systems that can potentially transfer from the race track to production vehicles. By competing and performing well in MotoGP, manufacturers can increase brand loyalty among fans who appreciate high-performance motorcycles, leading to long-term sales growth.

Participating in the top tier of two-wheel racing grants manufacturers access to invaluable data on performance and user preferences that they can use to refine their offerings for current and future customers: it’s not just about winning races—it’s about furthering technology leadership while increasing consumer demand for a manufacturer’s products.

Japanese manufacturer Honda holds the record for the most wins in the premier class of moto racing (MotoGP and 500cc), with 313. Archrival Yamaha are a close second, with 245. Both makers have been active since the mid-60s. Italian legend MV Augusta sits third on the podium, with 139: an impressive result considering the Varese brand has been active only until 1976 in the top class.
