Melbourne, the opening Grand Prix of 2026. For a few laps, an on-screen bar appears: the battery’s state of charge, the energy each driver holds in reserve to attack or defend. Then, race after race, that bar thinned out until it disappeared. No press release, no technical explanation. Just a piece of data that was there and, at a certain point, no longer was. To those who pointed it out, Stefano Domenicali replied on 30 July with a line worth more than any press note: «People care whether you’re overtaking or not. That’s the vast majority». And he recounted a conversation with George Lucas about the way new viewers approach the show. The director of Star Wars cited to justify removing an engineering graphic: right there you understand we’re not talking about telemetry, but about storytelling.
It isn’t a technical cut. It’s strategic subtraction
Let’s call strategic subtraction the choice of a property to remove information from its own product not out of laziness or bandwidth limits, but to protect two things at once: accessibility and the myth. Adding data is the instinctive move of anyone who sells complexity. Removing it, when done with intent, is a far more sophisticated decision — and almost always a marketing one. The battery in Formula 1 is no ordinary detail. From 2026 the power units deliver roughly 50% of their output from the hybrid side: 350 kW from the electric part, against the 400 of the combustion engine. The DRS, on track since 2011, no longer exists; in its place a movable wing and above all the MGU-K Override, which lets the chasing car discharge the full 350 kW of electric power to gain ground. In plain terms: a button that, pressed at the right moment, is worth about half a megajoule of extra thrust. Showing the charge bar means showing exactly this. And it’s here that the two readings diverge.
Complexity is a barrier to entry
Formula 1 has just lived through its biggest audience expansion ever, driven by Drive to Survive and by a public that came to motorsport through the door of storytelling, not through the door of engineering. This viewer doesn’t want a dashboard. Every extra piece of information on screen has a cognitive cost, and every unit of that cost is one more reason to change channel. The paradox is that the real complexity of the product, in 2026, has increased precisely as the audience widened toward those who tolerate complexity least. Energy management, override, deployment that runs out beyond 290 km/h: fascinating stuff for the engineer, background noise for the newcomer. Removing the bar, on this reading, is lowering the threshold. Fewer numbers on screen, more people who stay to watch the overtake without feeling behind on an exam they never asked to sit.
Protecting the kayfabe
Wrestling has a word for the shared fiction that holds the show together: kayfabe. As long as the audience doesn’t see the strings, the magic holds. The moment they see them, what remained sport becomes pure entertainment — fun, perhaps, but stripped of the stakes that demand real talent. The battery on screen is a string. If the viewer sees the chaser’s charge filling up, the button pressed and the overtake arriving a few metres later, that overtake stops being the driver’s merit and becomes arithmetic: whoever has more energy at that point of the track goes through. The DRS had already been accused for years of producing «fake» overtakes; with a power gap that can reach hundreds of horsepower, showing the data is tantamount to showing the trick. Edd Straw, on The Race, goes further and suspects this is precisely the point: hiding the bar so as not to make obvious the overtakes obtained from a power imbalance rather than from driving skill. The two readings, in the end, say the same thing from two sides — simplify to welcome, obscure so as not to reveal.
What it teaches those who build products and sponsorships
There’s a lesson here for anyone who manages the perception of a product, and therefore every brand that approaches sport. The first is that a public’s experience is designed by subtraction as much as by addition: the choice of what not to show is a marketing lever exactly like the choice of what to display. The second is more uncomfortable for sponsors. If a property goes so far as to hide a piece of data to defend the perceived authenticity of its own competition, then perceived authenticity has already become an asset to be administered — and the value a sponsor buys depends also on how that perception is kept standing. Domenicali says the data remains available to those who look for it, but it won’t return to the foreground. It’s a line that describes well the craft of whoever governs a sport-spectacle in 2026: not deciding what is true, but deciding what the audience sees. And the question that stays open, for a discipline that has made technology its own promise, is how far you can hide the engine without ceasing to be, precisely, a car race.
